Next Week: The Bluegrass Characters

Friday, September 28 @ 7:30 pm
Unitarian Fellowship
$15 at the Door

The Bluegrass Characters were brought together over a decade ago by the late and great Grammy-winning fiddler and Dobroist Stacy Phillips, a famed musicologist who imbued the group with its mission to play authentic, straightforward, traditional bluegrass, particularly for Northern urban audiences with too few opportunities to hear the real live music.  Their style eschews fireworks and dramatics for musicianship, clean vocals and straight-ahead instrumental drive in the tradition of Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.

Phil Zimmerman will be featured on mandolin with Andy Bromage playing guitar and Pete Kelly on bass--the original core trio of The Bluegrass Characters.  For this special HVBA appearance, they'll be joined by HVBA's own Jerry Oland on banjo and new sensation Sofia Chiarandini playing the fiddle.

Don't miss this remarkable concert.  As a recent review characterized the group, "no costume changes or big production numbers, just real live music.  And bad jokes."

Bluegrass in Arlington - 2018

Saturday, September 29 - 12:30 - 5:30 pm
48 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY

Angell Bandd

The HVBA has been participating in this annual event since 2011. This year we will begin with an open jam at 12:30 followed by four outstanding bands. Each week we will spotlight one of the participating bands in this newsletter.

If you take Traditional Bluegrass, Western Swing, and Old Time Fiddle then you pretty much have the styles of music that influence the Angell Bandd sound. They take the individual soloing from Bluegrass, the tight rhythm from Old Time Fiddling, and from Western Swing … well, that’s what lightens it up and puts a smile on their faces.

Composed of local musicians from Stone Ridge to Croton they met at bluegrass sessions in Poughkeepsie through the Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association.

The band members are Terry Ghee on fiddle, Paul Rieder on dobro/harmony/vocal, Jacques DeCroce on guitar, Ed Schaffer on mandolin/harmony/vocal, Lynn Lipton on Bass, and David Angell vocals.

Hudson Crossing, New Breaks, & Bash Bish Bluegrass Band will also be playing on September 29.

Join us for Bluegrass in Arlington - 2018! This bluegrass event is part of a larger street fair sponsored by Vassar College and the Town of Poughkeepsie.

A Greyfox favorite returns: Pennsylvania natives Mountain Ride will be performing live in our 1850's Dutch Barn in Red Hook this Saturday night! It's a family friendly event with food, drinks, and desserts vended. Come tap your feet and enjoy the show!
