VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEN!
There is a new study with information that Dr. Boone thinks is very important for her male patients.
The ‘Journal of Clinical Oncology’ in June, 2016 published a study showing that the blood level of a man’s prostate specific antigen (PSA) in his 40’s and 50’s correlates highly with future chances to develop prostate cancer!
22,071 men were studied and followed for 30 years. 711 men developed lethal prostate cancer. The average PSA for men between 40 and 49 was 0.68. The average PSA for men between 50-54 was 0.88. And, the average PSA for men from 55-59 was 0.96.
Eighty three percent of the lethal prostate cancers occurred in men with PSA greater than the median for their age group.
So, this study shows the importance of getting the first PSA at age 45 to determine a man’s future risk for prostate cancer and to determine how closely an individual should be followed by his urologist.
The good news is that only 3% of the men studied developed clinically significant prostate cancer.
