Dr. Boone has once again reviewed the literature on prevention of prostate cancer. Again, it appears in multiple studies that vitamin E and soy use do NOT help to prevent or treat prostate cancer. Studies continue to show that using Vitamin E in doses above what the body can get in good, whole food is likely to actually increase prostate cancer risk!
The only substance that has proven in scientific studies to help prevent prostate cancer or to slow prostate cancer progression is GREEN TEA CATECHIN. So, men, please drink one cup of strong organic green tea per day!
Red meat and cured meat consumption continues to be a predictor of prostate cancer development and progression. IF you are African American, have a family history of prostate cancer or already have prostate cancer, PLEASE DO NOT EAT RED MEAT.
The pharmaceutical industry continues to have NOTHING to offer in prostate cancer prevention drugs. Dutasteride and Finasteride have been extensively studied. These drugs work well to decrease the symptoms of benign prostate disease. But, they have NO preventive capability for prostate cancer. In fact, the the FDA warns that there is a 0.5% increase in the worse types of prostate cancer in younger men who take these drugs long term. Taking estrogen products did not lower the prostate cancer risk, either.
There continue to be no better biomarkers than the free and total PSA testing. And, we know that PSA is definitely not a perfect test.
Please get your yearly rectal exam and your PSA test and if you are African American, prostate cancer is particularly virulent. Please remind all of your male friends and family between 40 and 72 to get checked!!
