Dear PHS family,

One of my favorite traditions in Elul is to do a cheshbon ha'nefesh, or soul accounting. To reflect on the past year – our relationships, work, and spiritual life – and to set intentions for the year ahead. For me, as a parent to two small people, this exercise has become increasingly sacred – a quiet space for honest reflection. All are welcome to join me for a chesbon ha'nefesh workshop on Tuesday, September 15th 8-9:30pm on Zoom.  We will do some guided writing exercises, reflection, and chevruta. My hope is that this will both be a space for us to reflect, and get to know one another better. All are welcome. Please RSVP here.

Faith [Leener]

"Blotting Out Sin or Elevating It"

Does repentance imply continuity or severance of the past? Join Rabbi Leener for this year's Shabbat Shuva Shiur on Thursday, September 24 at 8pm via Zoom to explore the notion of Teshuvah based on Rabbi Soloveitchik's classic work "On Repentance".

Please RSVP here

This year more than ever we are all navigating uncertain waters. We know that for many the yamim nora’im is the acme of their personal religious experience and a source of stability in turbulent times. We recognize that responsibility and ask for your patience and forbearance as we attempt to facilitate a meaningful experience for our entire community. Please see PHS Board President David Hammer's recent message describing PHS' plan for both in person and virtual options for the High Holidays.

Registration and updated capacity information can be found here

Community Support - Goods and Services

Community Volunteer OpportunityCrown Heights JCC at 899 Montgomery Street is looking for volunteers to support the food pantry they created to meet the rising need for emergency food assistance in Crown Heights. Volunteers will sort food and package to-go pantry bags that will then be distributed to clients. They are also looking for drivers to deliver these food packages. To sign up to package food and/or to drive, follow this link. This is an ongoing opportunity. If you have any further questions, email Jeremy Nicholson.

Community Volunteer Opportunity: Camp Friendship (in Park Slope) is looking for volunteers for their food relief projects. Their most immediate needs are: Friday Drivers. Folks who can drive and deliver meals Fridays 12-3 (bring your own car and a copilot if you can) and Tuesday shifts in August. They continue to accept donations of non-perishable items at Camp Friendship 12-4 on Tuesdays and 10-1 on Saturdays, as well as at several bars that have drop boxes: Skylark on 5th Ave and Angry Wade's on Smith Street. They also accept durable bags like Fresh Direct bags to use in distribution. Sign up here to volunteer, or just bring donations during the donation time.  You can also donate directly to their GoFundMe site at https://www.gofundme.com/f/park-slope-food-pantry-at-camp-friendship to purchase more food.

Community Support: We are blessed with many generous community members who are eager to support the broader PHS community during this difficult time. If you are in a position to offer a good or service (e.g. an old laptop for work or school, help with groceries or medications) please fill out the following spreadsheet. If you are seeking assistance, please feel free to reach out to anyone on the list directly. Questions may be sent to info@prospectheightsshul.org.

COVID-19 Relief Fund: Rabbi Leener is still maintaining a COVID-19 tzedakah fund, through which he has been able to discreetly provide direct financial assistance, provide hot meals for 80 people, and support funeral arrangements for those in need. If you are able, please donate here, and specify that the gift is being made for relief funds.

Thank you and tizku l'mitzvot.
