Finding God in Isolation

In this series, five luminaries offer their take on the connection between God and loneliness.  Does loneliness or isolation have a purpose in our tradition? Is Loneliness the opposite of spirituality or even the absence of spirituality? How do we think about returning to religious community after periods of isolation? Join PHS for a series designed to challenge you intellectually and nourish you emotionally. Every class features a major Rabbi, scholar, or writer on the theme of God and loneliness, a significant short text that you will study in depth, and a conversation with our Brooklyn community.

First session will be November 19th, 8:30-9:30 PM, featuring Rabbi Dr. Zohar Atkins. More information to come in a dedicated email.

Rabbi Dr. Atkins is the Founder of Etz Hasadeh and a Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. He holds a DPhil in Theology from Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and semikha from JTS. He is the author of An Ethical and Theological Appropriation of Heidegger’s Critique of Modernity (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and Nineveh (Carcanet, 2019). He writes a weekly Torah commentary @ etzhasadeh.substack.com and a daily question @ whatiscalledthinking.substack.c

Community Volunteer Opportunity: Camp Friendship (in Park Slope) is looking for volunteers for their food relief projects. They continue to accept donations of non-perishable items at Camp Friendship 12-4 on Tuesdays and 10-1 on Saturdays, as well as at several bars that have drop boxes: Skylark on 5th Ave and Angry Wade's on Smith Street. Sign up here to volunteer, or just bring donations during the donation time.  You can also donate directly to their GoFundMe site at https://www.gofundme.com/f/park-slope-food-pantry-at-camp-friendship to purchase more food.

Community Support: We are blessed with many generous community members who are eager to support the broader PHS community during this difficult time. If you are in a position to offer a good or service (e.g. an old laptop for work or school, help with groceries or medications) please fill out the following spreadsheet. If you are seeking assistance, please feel free to reach out to anyone on the list directly. Questions may be sent to info@prospectheightsshul.org.

COVID-19 Relief Fund: Rabbi Leener is still maintaining a COVID-19 tzedakah fund, through which he has been able to discreetly provide direct financial assistance, provide hot meals for 80 people, and support funeral arrangements for those in need. If you are able, please donate here, and specify that the gift is being made for relief funds.

Thank you and tizku l'mitzvot.
