On July 14 2020, WIEGO will host the Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC): Informal Workers & COVID-19: Impact and Vision for the Future. During this virtual event experts from WIEGO's Urban Policies Programme will provide detailed insights on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on urban informal workers while exploring creative policy and planning responses. The Urban Thinkers Campus is an initiative under the World Urban Campaign of UN-HABITAT. 

The webinar will be in English with French and Spanish interpretation provided.

For World's Street Vendors, Life May Never be the Same after COVID-19
In this installment of WIEGO’s global analysis of news, we explore how measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are impacting street vendors' livelihoods. Though many vendors have seen their lives and work disrupted by COVID-19, our analysis also reveals stories of solidarity and innovation.
Overview of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Inclusive Recycling in Brazil

In a new briefing note, researchers share findings from surveys conducted with 140 waste picker cooperatives. The study aimed to understand the functioning of cooperatives of waste pickers during COVID-19, the impact on the trade of recyclable materials from the perspective of cooperatives of waste pickers during the pandemic, and the health situation of waste pickers. The report is available in English and Portuguese.

Extending Social Protection to Informal Workers
The COVID-19 crisis has underlined the urgent need to extend social protection to workers in the informal economy. How can governments extend social protection coverage to informal workers? What is the difference between social insurance and social assistance? 

This Briefing Note from the WIEGO archives provides an overview of social protection debates and issues from an informal worker perspective.

New WIEGO Publications
The Human Rights Situation of Waste Pickers in Latin America: An Overview Based on International Standards
This report examines the human rights situation of waste pickers in 6 countries in Latin America. The report contributed to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) citing violations suffered by waste pickers in Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua and Uruguay in their annual report. A suite of workers' materials is currently being developed to share the findings of this report with waste pickers. The report is available in Spanish.
