All go for autumn in Ahuriri!

As the heat of the summer is cooled by the chill winds of autumn, there's still plenty going on in and around Ahuriri. The second Murals for Oceans festival is underway - and there are lots of interesting and inspiring events coming up.

Soggy, but successful Art Deco Beach Dig

Art Deco weekend was a wet affair this year, but it didn't discourage the hordes of eager kids of all ages who got down on hands and knees in the rain to dig at our Art Deco Beach Dig. We gave away a thousand prizes, including an amazing City Tour for four from Hooters Vintage & Classic Car Hire for the best children's art deco outfit. A huge thanks to our members and local businesses for donating all those fantastic prizes. Our Art Deco Shuttle between the city and Ahuriri was also a big hit.

New Murals for Oceans

Local and international artists will be hard at work painting new murals onto walls all over Ahuriri and Napier this month, as part of the second Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans festival. Each artwork puts a spotlight on issues related to ocean conservation, including littering, overfishing and climate change. The PangeaSeed Foundation, Napier City Council and Alternative Arts Initiative are behind the festival, which also includes a range of community-based conservation events. 150 years since the wreck of the Montmorency

If you've walked past Spriggs Park on Hardinge Road, Ahuriri, you will have noticed an anchor set at the gates of the children's playground. It came from a three-masted schooner called the Montmorency, that went down in flames just off Ahuriri Beach 150 years ago this month, on March 24, 1867. To mark the occasion, members of families who were on the passenger list will meet this weekend. MTG and The Customhouse have information on the schooner for those interested to find out more.
