Approaching Patrons with a Potential Gambling Problem—A Win-Win-Win Situation

Taking action to prevent problem gambling has a wider impact than simply helping the gambler with a potential problem.

As seen in the recently published Insight 2011—Responding to Patrons with Potential Gambling Problems, developing a response framework that is systematic and respectful can not only help the gambler in question, but also improves the experience of venue staff and other patrons.

Sympathetic Magic and Gambling: Adherence to the Law of Contagion Varies with Gambling Severity

In the Journal of Gambling Studies (Vol 28, Issue 4, December, 2012), research by Moira Teed of the University of Guelph and others found that people with gambling problems exhibit evidence of magical thinking related to luck. In a slot machine game, gamblers high in problem severity chose the “lucky” coin holder and avoided the “unlucky” coin holder significantly more than gamblers low in problem severity.


McGill University International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High Risk Behaviors

An immediate opening for a post-doctoral fellow focused upon studying youth risk-taking behaviors is available.

The successful candidate will work in the area of youth risk-taking behaviors and will become an active member of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors.


Leisure Substitution and Problem Gambling: Report of a Proof of Concept Group Intervention

The Problem Gambling Research and Treatment Centre, University of Melbourne, has published a report examining the effect of providing a structured re-engagement program for 30 participants considered at risk of relapse. Substantial positive change was achieved.

The research team recommends that this proof of concept study of leisure substitution for problem gambling is replicated in a controlled study to determine its relative effectiveness.

Call for Proposals: Research on the Use of Social Media in Gambling

The Victoria Department of Justice is seeking to fund a study of how industry promotes gambling opportunities using social media, who is being targeted and how access is provided to the gambling product. The study will also identify and describe:

  • the availability of gambling opportunities via social media, mobile platforms and gaming consoles (monetary and non-monetary)
  • if there has been a transition both to and from traditional forms of gambling and gambling associated social media
  • the future direction of gambling via social media

Call for Papers: 10th Annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse

Proposals are currently being accepted for workshops and poster presentations for the 10th Annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse (June 26-28, 2013, Kansas City, MO). The theme of this year's conference is Understanding the Past and Embracing the Future.

The Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada Reno and the International Gaming Institute at the University of Nevada Las Vegas invite paper and symposium submissions for The 15th International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking at Caesars Palace Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, May 27-31, 2013.

Some topic areas sought include:

  • Psychology of gambling and risk taking
  • Problem and pathological gambling
  • Internet and social media gambling


Call for Applications: Manitoba Gambling Research Program

The Manitoba Gambling Research Program is now accepting grant applications from Manitoba researchers for Conference Grants (up to $2,000). Applications are accepted year-round, however applicants must apply prior to attending the conference.


Call for Applications: MLSYA Data Access Program

As of April 1, 2012, the Manitoba Longitudinal Study of Young Adults (MLSYA) Data Access Program began accepting applications from Manitoba researchers who would like to use this unique dataset for their own research studies.

The MLSYA followed a longitudinal sample (n=679) of 18 to 20 year olds from across Manitoba over a five year period from 2007 to 2011.
