Where disability matters

One in five Disabled Britons have their rights violated, UN told

One in five British people, according to a report in The Guardian, are suffering erosion of their rights because they are disabled, the government-backed Equality and Human Rights Commission has said in a damning report to the United Nations

The body cites “deeply concerning” evidence that despite government pledges to improve conditions for the nearly 14 million disabled Britons, their situation is getting worse across the UK

Have Your Say - Council consults on Ilford Town Centre improvements

Redbridge Council is consulting on Ilford Town Centre improvements and want to know how you currently use Ilford Town Centre and if there are any specific changes you would like to see.

This is a great opportunity for Deaf, Disabled people and older people to put forward suggestions and comments such as improved provision of public toilets in new developments, increased Blue Badge Parking for Disabled people, or the impact of cyclists on your experiences when shopping in Ilford.

Stall bookings open for Volunteering Fair, 23 October

The annual Volunteering Fair - to be held in the Town Hall, Ilford - brings together groups looking for volunteers with members of the public interested in volunteering. Last year dozens of organisations took part and hundreds of people attended.

Are you a Deaf or Disabled person interested in policing and crime issues?

Would you like to work with the Metropolitan Police Service to increase knowledge and insight of the issues affecting Deaf and Disabled Londoners? If so, you may be interested in becoming an Independent Advisor on the Disability Independent Advisory group to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). This is a non paid voluntary role.

Severe mental health problems lead to poor physical health and early death
A new Public Health England report shows people with severe mental illness (SMI) suffer worse physical health compared to the general population. They also die on average 15 to 20 years earlier.

Professor Julia Verne, Head of Clinical Epidemiology at Public Health England, said: “We need to look beyond mental illness to a ‘whole person’ approach to health care, helping to improve peoples’ lives.” Read more
