NARBC Arlington Recap

Another NARBC has passed in Texas. It was an excellent show from great promoters. USARK appreciates all that Bob Ashley, Brian Potter and the NARBC Crew do for the herp community.

Our booth was packed with visitors. This was due in large part to the reptile mascots including Stink the Skink (Blue-tongued), Ki (Macklot's python) and a few Nicaraguan boas (see photo at bottom of a T+ Nic). These reptiles bring a crowd, allowing us to educate attendees about USARK and the reptiles themselves. Even at reptile shows, there are some people with a fear of snakes which can be resolved through proper interaction and education. We also answer husbandry and suitable pet species questions.

Zoo Med held a silent auction in their booth on Sunday for a very nice tropical, planted terrarium set-up. This donation brought $425 to benefit USARK. We certainly appreciate all that Zoo Med does, not just for USARK, but for the entire herp community from education to conservation.

The Saturday night auction set a record for Texas. Over $16,000 was raised to benefit USARK thanks to the generosity of all the vendors who donated. Thank you to all donors and auction attendees. Below is a list of those who made the auction possible.

We must also say thanks to all the volunteers who helped in the booth, collected auction donations, set up the auction, and more. This is a team effort and is not possible without them.

Volunteers: Chris, Gillian, Dan, Chad, Russ, Kristin, Nanette, Caleb, Sabrina, Kelly, Kim, Logan, Dr. Cord Offerman, Greyson Offerman

New York AB 4786

New York Assembly Bill 4786 has been introduced and assigned to the Agriculture Committee. This bill changes language to a current law. Rather than a misdemeanor for owning a "wild animal" that may be allowed to harm a human, it will now be a Class E felony for, "owning, possessing or harboring a wild animal."

See the list of species which are already prohibited and the current law regarding their ownership in New York at the following link:

SnakeDays Grant

For the first time, SnakeDays will be offering a Student Research Grant, which we plan to offer
yearly going forward. For those not aware of the event, SnakeDays is an educational gathering held in Sanderson, TX every summer which focuses on the herpetofauna of west Texas and the importance of contributions made by citizen science. In addition to a day of lectures, we have a fundraiser which, to date, has raised over $25,000 that has gone directly to herp conservation and research.

For more information on the grant, click here:
