Manneken Press is pleased to announce the publication of ten mixed media monotypes by Carlos Andrade.
Carlos Andrade created ten monotypes during his visit to Manneken Press in November of 2016. Known for incorporating unusual, vernacular materials into his prints, Andrade utilized festones in the monotypes. These colorful, triangular plastic flags attached to strings are typically seen fluttering in long strands around open air markets and street fairs in various parts of the world. Andrade began by collaging the festones onto sheets of paper as compositional and color elements, forming the base over which he would print various shaped relief plates. In the finished prints the festones' range of transparent colors overlap to create new colors, their triangular shapes, wrinkles, attached strings and stitching add additional texture and linearity to the compositions, and the ink sits atop the smooth impermeable plastic, having been absorbed into the rougher paper surface. The prints range in size from 60 x 44 1/4 inches to 29 1/2 x 21 inches.
