Monotypes by LJ Douglas

Manneken Press is featuring a selection of recent monotypes by LJ Douglas, an Illinois painter and printmaker who's work encompasses a wide range of ideas, including botany, the body, maps, patterns and the visual interpretation of music.

The garden is Douglas' inspiration in her newest prints: abstracted floral and faunal imagery, garden designs, bright colors and patterns observed in her own garden make their way into these playful, intimate images.

Betsy Ross Garden, 2016. Monotype with chine collé. Image: 8 ¼” x 10”, sheet size: 13 ½” x 14 ½”.
Finn's Folly, 2016. Monotype with chine collé. Image size: 10” x 16”, sheet size: 14 ½” x 20 ¼”.
Douglas used a variety of techniques such as relief printing, trace monotype, stencils, ghost-printing, and chine colle' in creating these unique prints. Her abstractions evoke the ordered plots and rows of formal gardens and landscapes juxtaposed with chaotic and fecund nature.

"My work emerges from a conceptual space where various cultural ideas come together by merging abstract processes with uninhibited, impulsive and deliberate actions. I engage in ideas concerning the interconnectedness between things. Free association of ideas guides the work process, playing off of visual similarities, color or form as a way to see and understand a 'felt' world".
