Jack Davidson:
New edition and monotypes
Jack Davidson: davidelvisandi, 2016. Woodcut, edition of 20. Image: 18" x 15"/paper: 24 ½" x 21".
Published by Manneken Press.

During his first visit to Manneken Press in April 2016, Jack Davidson created one woodcut edition and eleven monotypes. Simple forms, straightforward and symmetrical compositions, and a carefully considered palette are hallmarks of these, his first published prints.

Davidson’s monotypes, all of which are 30" x 22", fall into two distinct groups: five of them consist of biomorphic color shapes arranged in rows, ovals or an “X” shape, which evoke a loose or accidental quality. Recognizing that the color shapes are actually Rorschach blots created on varying axes prompts an understanding that these are highly controlled compositions that walk a line between order and nonchalance.

In the remaining six prints painterly elements and additional Rorschach blots are carefully balanced with hard edged color or metallic forms over pastel color grounds. These prints are based on collages that the artist makes from torn painted paper as a way to work out compositions. The care that Davidson takes to recreate a torn paper edge is evident, and he has incorporated metal leaf into certain of the monotypes.

“davidelvisandi” is a two-color woodcut that evokes one of Davidson’s paintings, which in turn riffed on a well known photograph of David Bowie in costume.
