A belated happy new year to you all. I hope that you enjoyed some rest over the festive season and that 2014 has started off well.

After much anticipation, our centenary year is finally upon us! There is a renewed sense of excitement and energy among all those involved in the preparations for this historic event in our special school.

We started off the celebrations with a special dedication ceremony held on Friday 31 January at St John’s Parish. This was followed by Founders’ Day on Monday 3 February. It was wonderful to see so many of our current boys and their parents at these events, but also old boys, past parents and past staff. A big thank you to everyone for making our birthday so special and memorable.

Our next event on the centenary calendar is Fun Night on Thursday 20 March. Preparations are already well under way by our Fundraising Committee.

Any old boys who are golfing enthusiasts, please read below in the newsletter about joining us for a round of golf at Steenberg Golf Estate on Friday 21 March (Human Rights Day).

A reminder that all tickets to the Centenary Banquet taking place at Pigalle Restaurant in March are sold out. Those that have booked and paid for their tickets can collect them from our Newlands Road office.

For all our out of town old boys coming to the banquet and for those wanting to make a whole weekend of celebrations, we encourage a visit to Warwick Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Sunday 23 March. Warwick is a family owned farm run by the Ratcliffe family, who have been part of the WPPS community for years. They offer some of the best South African wines as well as gourmet picnics for the whole family on their lawns. Booking is essential; please contact Warwick directly at or 021 884 4410.

Finally, we have launched a very exciting fundraising campaign, the Centenary Pathway. This will be our only centenary fundraising drive, and we urge our entire school community, current and past, to get involved. Please read more on this below and support us in this initiative.

Saturday 22 March

Monday 3 February was Founders’ Day and will forever be remembered by those who were privileged to be a part of it. In the morning the boys were treated to cupcakes, specially delivered by Mr Hosty in a 100th birthday branded helicopter piloted by Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Neil Warren.

This was followed in the evening by the picnic and book launch. As past and current families set up their picnic blankets on the Mount Royal Field, a group of 100 marimba players, all past or present boys, enthralled the crowd as they attempted a Guinness World record.

Michael Hosty officially welcomed everyone, and introduced Pauline Pearce, co-author of A Prep School and its People. Pauline invited one of her former pupils, and special guest for the evening, Mark Shuttleworth, to launch the book. Mark wrote the foreword for the book and fondly reminisced about his time at the school and the value of the education he received, which was formative in his life. He emphasised the always close relationship between staff and boys, and the involvement and commitment of the parents. Mark concluded by encouraging the boys to meet the challenges of the future, to remember the school motto: Iusta Tenete (Hold fast to what you know is right) and always to follow their dreams.

A rousing chorus of Happy Birthday was then sung, followed by the release of 200 balloons.

A highlight of the evening was a display by the Kaapse Klopse, with which the boys enthusiastically joined in.

The picnic continued until long after the sun had gone down, allowing the many old boys, parents and staff to reconnect and share their special memories of WPPS.

A Prep School and its People is available for purchase for R380. Please find attached an order form. You can also buy directly from our Newlands Road office during school hours.

Old boys are warmly invited to play a round of golf at the first-class Steenberg Golf course on Friday 21 March (Human Rights Day).

Tee-off will be from 11.55 to 13.30. The cost is R560 per person, which is for green fees only. Any additional costs ie golf carts, drinks etc will be for each players own account.

Join us for a drink after golf in the bar (cash bar).

For more information or if you would like to play, please email Mrs Chris McEwen -

This will be our only centenary fundraising drive, and we urge our entire school community, current and past, to get involved.

We invite you to choose from two brick sponsorship options – a single brick or a family brick. To generate some excitement among the grades, there will be a prize at the end of the campaign for the grade with the highest percentage of bricks bought.

We would also greatly appreciate your considering making a further donation; there are five options from which to choose, which are in line with the overall centenary vision.

All money raised from this sponsorship will support the Centenary Foundation Trust, which will make a significant contribution to every aspect of the school’s future. Furthermore, the Trust has Section 18A status as a Public Benefit Organisation, so donors may request a Section 18A certificate.

The engraved bricks will provide a tangible history of WPPS, and will serve to remind those who follow that they are part of a wonderful community of students, alumni, parents, grandparents, teachers and friends, who have nurtured and supported the school and its values since its founding in 1914. The names of those who walked the pathway before them will inspire future generations.

The Centenary Pathway will officially be opened at the end of 2014 and will replace the current tarred walkway between the Eden and Newlands Road campuses.

We are very appreciative of the tremendous generosity shown thus far, and look forward to our school community’s support of this exciting fundraising drive.

Should you have any questions or would like any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Gary Skeeles: or 021 761 8074.
