Support the Port Protest

As a seaside city we are all connected to the beautiful Waitemata harbour in some way. The Auckland Council have let us down again by voting to let the Ports of Auckland reclaim another huge chunk of the harbour.

Many of you will have seen the article in today's Herald and read of the many prominent New Zealanders, outraged by this plan who are calling for it to be stopped. Read it here The link also contains a great map showing the levels of reclamation since 1861. I was shocked to see the extent of the encroachment.

This picture is a mock up of how it could look. The most disturbing aspect is how it blocks the view of the harbour entrance from Queen's Wharf, which rate payers paid $40 million for.

Stop Stealing Our Harbour has a great website with more information. You can sign up to add your voice to the growing number of Aucklanders who want to protect their harbour.

The group is staging a protest rally at the end of  Queen's Wharf this Sunday afternoon, and also expects a flotilla of 100 boats or more to lend their support offshore.  Join them on Sunday, March 22 at 3.30pm on Queens Wharf to protest the Bledisloe Wharf extensions.
