End of year message for the Character Coalition

Character Coalition

Character Counts

Another year bites the dust!
But we have made progress.

It is hard to believe that the year is nearly over. It has been a roller coaster year for us with some good news. But there is still a feeling that character and heritage have an uphill battle, despite the gains we've made.
Since the last newsletter we have been working hard to find expert assistance for the submissions phase of the UP process.

We have made some progress with an offer of advice and assistance from Salmond Reed which is very much appreciated and we may have found a planning lawyer to assist with the submission that goes before the appointed hearings panel.

In our submission, we have been advised to:

  • identify the worst deficiencies in the Unitary Plan provisions regarding heritage and character
  • suggest both rule-based and policy-based solutions
  • determine if the rules are good enough to achieve our ends, do they have enough teeth
  • examine the assessment criteria for decisions regarding heritage-character.

Fighting Fund

We have been advised that we will need about $15,000 to fund our submission. Currently $5500 has been pledged which leaves a shortfall of about $9500. Without  more pledges we cannot proceed. If each group was able to donate $200-$500 we could proceed.

This phase is important for a good outcome for all member groups across the region. A professional-level submission addressing the policy/regulation issues is the only way to gain any traction. Your group's support now is crucial. We must not fall at the last hurdle.

We wish you a very happy festive season and a restful break.

Looking forward to 2014 and a positive outcome from the unitary plan hearings.

Warmest regards

Sally and Alex
