Character Counts

Worth Every Penny!

The submission prepared by Sue Simons and her team at Berry Simons was a magnificent effort. A small number of Coalition members met with Sue and Craig to provide input and feedback. The Coalition is also very grateful to Bruce Petry and Richard Bollard of Salmond Reed who provided a great deal of information on heritage issues that we were able to incorporate into our submission. We were also assisted by a recent planning graduate, Patrick Moss, who was recommended to us by Elizabeth Rose of Auckland University. Thanks to Jennie Hayman for coordinating that for us. As you can see it was a real team effort. If you would like to read our submission it is on our website or you can download it here.

Funds still needed

Everyone involved either worked voluntarily (members) or at a substantially reduced rate. However there are still bills to pay. We have received several very generous donations from individuals and a number of member groups have also provided funds. Currently we have a shortfall of $1,400 to complete payment for the work done so far. We will also need funds to cover the next two stages of the process. Payment of this amount is urgent. Can you help?

If your group has not already made a payment to our fighting fund I urge you to do so now. We have come so far and it would be so disappointing if we were not able to follow up our fantastic effort.

Next Steps

The council will publish all submissions online by the end of May, along with a summary report of the decisions requested in them. The submissions will be indexed and searchable by submission number, organisation and name.

During this period, we will be able to respond to the decisions requested by submitters, by stating either our support or opposition to particular points raised.

Following this there will be hearings in front of the panel. The Council have not indicated when this stage is likely to occur.

The Character Coalition was invited to join the Heritage Advisory Panel. Claudia Page from Devonport Heritage agreed to be our representative and I will also attend when I can. The first meeting was held on 14 April. Discussions included heritage incentives, the future of Mainline Steam, an update on the pre 1944 overlay and the promise of more news about the St James soon. Please get in touch with me or Claudia if you would like more information.
Have you checked out the Auckland Design manual on the Auckland Council website yet? Do you think it will solve our problems?
See it here and let me know what you think.
