A Call to Pray for St. Petersburg in the
Aftermath of April 3 Terrorist Attack
A Suicide Bomber Killed Himself and 13 Others on Monday, April 3
This is a picture of the train car shortly after pulling into Technology Institute station. This is the exact route our family takes every Sunday to go to church. Hundreds of thousands pass through here every week. The attacker may have chosen one of the busiest routes possible for maximum effect.
How do you react when tragedy strikes so close to home? Of course your first thought is to call everyone you know, starting with your family, to make sure they are ok. Our phones immediately starting getting dozens of texts and messages, people all over the world checking to see if we were safe. (We all are, praise God!) Later on you begin to think about how simply by the grace of God, you weren't on that train, and how tragic it must be for the families of those that were. And of course, you begin to think about where GOD is in all of this, and how He could use this for His good.
We know God is sovereign, He is in control, and He is loving in all His ways. We know He uses what was intended for evil and turns it for good. Like Joshua told his brothers, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive" (Genesis 50:20). WE BELIEVE MANY PEOPLE WILL BE PRESERVED FOR ETERNAL LIFE AS A RESULT OF THIS TRAGEDY!
Will you agree to pray with us for Russia and St. Petersburg this week? This is an opportunity to really reach people who may have been closed to the gospel previously. For example, one young man named Sasha showed up at Kim's English club last night. He isn't a believer at all. He told Kim that he needed to use that exact metro route, but was running 30 minutes late, and because of that he was not on the train when it exploded. "That's a miracle, God watched over you!" Kim told him, and he agreed.
The simple fact is, tragedy gives us an opening to talk to people about the Lord and show them His love! We are asking for prayer for great boldness and that signs and wonders would be poured out into our city as people gather to pray (see Acts 4:29). As Easter approaches (which is the most important holiday for all Russians), we know this particular Easter will be very special for citizens here in Petersburg. Pray for a special revelation of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ! And continue to pray for our families' protection at Word of God church, according to His promises in Psalm 91.
