Social club Christmas parties

With the silly season upon us, members are reminded to consider insurance implications for any social club events planned.

A previous Help Desk Q&A article may assist members with general advice. Members with an incorporated social club are advised to contact Frank Loschiavo directly, to ensure the entity is fully covered under the LMI policy.

Road Management Plan survey 2013

MAV Insurance recently invited all Victorian councils to complete the Road Management Plan survey; councils should have received a link to the survey via email in late September.

This survey represents an important initiative in relation to one of the scheme’s key claims drivers. The information gathered will not only assist MAV Insurance in its provision of risk management services surrounding this claims cohort, but will also allow members to compare their Road Management Plans to a sector wide snapshot.

It is planned to present the results of the survey to members at the first round of Best Practice Forums in 2014. If your council has not yet completed the survey we would greatly appreciate your doing so as soon as possible.

Commercial Crime risk management services survey

MAV Insurance has invited all Commercial Crime members to complete a survey regarding the 2014 Commercial Crime regional workshops.

The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete, and the results will be used to tailor workshop agendas to each region.

Member Claims Review Meetings

The LMI Claims department will shortly be inviting members to participate in December claims review meetings. These meetings will discuss the status and financial reserves on current claims, and are an ideal opportunity for members to better understand their current claims experience.

Further enquiries phone LMI Claims manager Ivan Ciardullo, (03) 8664 9304.

MAV Insurance guidance documents on public websites: reminder

Members are reminded that guidance documents produced by MAV Insurance (including the best practice manuals and circulars) are for member use only, and should not be made publicly available (e.g. via council websites).

MAV Insurance documents often contain sensitive information regarding insurance coverage, claims data and scenarios, and legal advice, and are the intellectual property of the scheme.

Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case situation. If you currently provide or intend to provide public access to an MAV Insurance document, please contact MAV Insurance to discuss.

In the Courts

MAV Insurance successfully defended the following two Victorian claims in the past couple of months: a case against a water corporation regarding an extreme rain event inundating a vegetable farm; and a case against a council after a YMCA employee was injured in the course of their employment.

The unsuccessful parties have indicated they will be appealing both these decisions

´╗┐Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry

The 2013 Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry Report has now been released by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.  The intent of the inquiry was to learn from the January 2013 bushfires, and it contains a number of sections relevant to local government.

Heavy Vehicle Route Assessment Tool

The new national heavy vehicle regulations will commence in January 2014, and will see councils assume responsibility for controlling heavy vehicle access onto local roads.

A national webinar for local government was held recently by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).

An information kit is also available.

For further information contact John Hennessy.

Thank you to our council speakers

A very big thank you to our five council speakers who joined us at our recent events:

  • Ian Inglis from Baw Baw Shire, who discussed council’s video road inspection program at the Eastern Forum
  • Danielle Sheean from Alpine Shire, who spoke on council’s asset inspection systems at the North Central Rural Forum
  • Mark Dornau from Boroondara, Rob Mineo from Monash, Sarah Priestley from Wyndham, who presented their council’s experiences with tree root management.

Sharing experiences between councils is extremely valuable. If your council has a topic that you think others would benefit hearing about, please contact MAV Insurance.
