Merry Christmas from MAV Insurance

As another year comes to a close, we would like to thank our members for their participation assistance and support over the past year. It is greatly appreciated.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous New Year.

MAV Insurance will continue to operate as normal over the Christmas and New Year period, except on public holidays.

MAV Insurance Risk Management Award

The Liability Mutual Insurance scheme is establishing a new annual award for Excellence in Risk Management, which will recognise one officer from a member organisation from Victoria and Tasmania.

The award will be given to recognise the effort of an officer in the delivery of a reform or project which minimises the insurable risk of their organisation.

Member organisations will be sent information about the award this week, and nominations should be provided by 5pm on 9 February. As part of the award, the LMI scheme will provide a trip to the Risk Management Society Annual Conference in New Orleans in April. It is anticipated that the winners of the award will be announced in late February.

For further information, contact Owen Harvey-Beavis.

Road Management Act win: case study Shire of Campaspe ats Kennedy

As reported in the last bulletin, on 14 November His Honour Judge Bowman of the County Court handed down his decision in the Road Management Act case of Shire of Campaspe ats Kennedy.

Minter Ellison, who ran the case for MAV Insurance, have now provided a summary of the key learnings for members (link below). This decision is significant for road authorities in that it is the first detailed analysis by the courts of key defences under the Act.

The importance of attending the scene as soon as an incident is reported, measuring the defect and confirming this with photographs cannot be underestimated, this evidence proved compelling in the trial.

2015 MAV Insurance Conference Tasmania

In 2015 the MAV Insurance Conference will be held in Hobart on 23-24 April. We are currently working on finalising a venue for the event and hope to confirm further details early in the new year. If you have any suggestions regarding presentations or speakers, please email Sharyn La Rocca.

2015 MAV Social media for rural and regional councils

The MAV is holding a social media workshop for rural and regional councils on 19 February.

This workshop will explore how social media resources can be leveraged by regional councils to communicate – even with offline stakeholders. The workshop will include how to identify key policy issues, risks and opportunities, incorporating social media tools into your engagement strategies, and learning how to deal with, or head-off, online criticism.

It is suitable for any local government employee whose role involves communication or community engagement. A similar session was held in August this year which received a lot of positive feedback. A laptop or tablet is required to participate in this session.

Registrations can be made online.
