Alison Hawkins has recently joined MAV Procurement as Contracts Manager, replacing Jo Cross who has taken a position at Frankston City Council. Alison has come from Benalla Rural City Council, where she held the role of Procurement and Contracts Coordinator. Prior to this, Alison obtained significant experience in the banking industry working with the NAB in a number of roles including Risk Manager and Relationship Manager.

News from MAV preferred suppliers
An innovative and green approach to EPS waste recycling:
Moira Shire Council has taken delivery of Mobile Mil-tek EPS900 polystyrene (Styrofoam or EPS) compactor, a possible world first.
A massive waste-disposal cost in landfill is transformed into a cash-flow positive project for Moira Shire and its ratepayers. The unit eliminates the astronomical cost of EPS disposal in landfill and recycles the material into a product with saleable value.
A custom-built trailer and power generator turns the Mil-tek EPS900 into a mobile polystyrene compacting unit, and was built in collaboration with the council. It was financed through the Victorian Government’s Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership.
The council has estimated the payback on the investment is less than 12-months.
John Mangan, coordinator of Waste Management Services, Moira Shire Council stated: “I can’t speak highly enough of Mil-tek and their staff in the delivery of this project."
Mil-tek are approved suppliers to local government through MAV Procurement’s Mobile Garbage Bins (NPN1.11- 2) contract and provide state-of-the art compactors and balers for all types of waste management needs, and offer consultancy advice to improve performance in waste source separation, compaction and recycling.

Environmentally friendly fuel:
Hume City Council is one of the first Victorian councils leading the way to convert its diesel fleet to environmentally friendly B20 biodiesel.
The installation of a fully integrated 60,000 litre biodiesel storage facility at council’s depot has enabled in-house refuelling where the majority of its diesel vehicles are based, in particular the garbage truck fleet. The biodiesel is supplied by ARfuels.
The purpose of the project was to achieve a 30 per cent reduction in toxic airborne emissions across council’s diesel fleet. Along with the improvements in air quality, it’s estimated the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from council’s fleet by over 200 tonnes per year which is 10 per cent of the city’s climate protection reduction target.
John Williams, Council Fleet co-ordinator said: “There have been no adverse effects on the performance and maintenance of trucks and plant using the B20 fuel. The most exciting aspect of this initiative is that Hume is operating one of Australia’s most environmentally sustainable municipal fleets with biodiesel.”

After Hours Call Services (CH8311)
The existing MAV contract with Oracle CMS will expire on 31 May 2015. MAV Procurement is currently preparing to conduct a new tender to replace the existing contract, and is seeking expressions of interest from council staff to assist in developing the business requirements, and undertaking the tender evaluation process. MAV Procurement has released a tender for the Provision of Office and Workplace Supplies, Associated Products and Services (ST4412-2015) to replace the existing arrangement we have with Lyreco, which expires next month.
Categories for this tender include: General Stationary & Consumables, Printer & IT Consumables, Copy Paper & Specialty Paper Products, Catering / Kitchen Consumables, Janitorial & Cleaning Supplies and Office Furniture.

Procurement Leaders Conference
Following the success of our inaugural conference, MAV Procurement is proud to confirm the return of the Procurement Leaders Conference in 2015.
The event provides a unique opportunity for current and aspiring procurement leaders to undertake an intensive two-day program. The program is designed to support ongoing development of leaders who can meet the growing strategic and operational needs of modern councils.
It will provide the latest thinking in procurement practice and showcase examples of innovative approaches to procurement within the sector and beyond.
The 2014 conference was a catalyst for establishing the LEAP Procurement Development program, which is now being rolled-out to councils in partnership with ArcBlue Consulting.
This year’s conference will be held in the second half of 2015, with a date to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Connecting Communities Event: 11 March
Telstra, a preferred ICT supplier, in conjunction with the MAV, are hosting an event for councils on 11 March. This event will cover a number of areas of interest, including: connected city capabilities; occupational health and safety in the mobile workplace; fleet tracking; and accessibility needs within the community.
Telstra has invested a lot into developing solutions that specifically addresses key challenges for councils, such as: asset and infrastructure utilisation, sustainability and green reporting, cost containment, duress and lone worker legislation, OH&S, safety of the community and liability, and serving the community of the blind, vision/hearing impaired, physically disabled and aged.
This event will give you a great opportunity to hear from Telstra, peers, and experts. The day will be focused on local government challenges and creating outcomes for councils, rather than technology.
