PRINCIPAL'S PĀNUI

18 November 2022

Dear Parents & Whānau,
There are a couple of things I'd like to draw your attention to this week.

Firstly, we'd love some volunteers to help with our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle which is raising money for our new school hall mural. See more information below!

Secondly, the Wellington City Council has asked us to pass on the following information to our school community:

Transport in Berhampore & Newtown Survey
We have been asked by the Wellington City Council to share their 'Experiences of transport in Berhampore to Newtown' survey. The Council is looking to make changes to transport in the Berhampore to Newtown area and upgrade the Berhampore town centre, and are keen for feedback about how you and your whanau currently use and experience this area. Take the survey here and have your say.

Berhampore Town Village upgrade workshops – 23 November & 7 Dec, 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Berhampore Community Centre
The Council is holding two community workshops to help design the upgrade to the Berhampore Village and would like to have SWIS involved. Please contact me if you are interested in participating - they are looking for one parent and one student rep.

Walking access to the Badminton Centre
It was suggested that walking access to the Badminton centre could be improved, particularly for safety. See the map below – the red is a current track and the pink is a section that could be built. The Council is keen to know if the pink section were to be built would this help and whether kids use the track and how often. Please contact seb.bishop@wcc.govt.nz with feedback.

Have a great weekend,
Ngā mihi
Toby Stokes
Principal

Don't forget to check out the school's Facebook Page which has the latest updates about what is going on at school.

Can you help with a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser?

Bunnings Lyall Bay have kindly offered us two slots to do a sausage sizzle fundraiser to raise money and drum up interest in our exciting Hall Mural Project. The dates we have been offered are 26 & 27 November, 9am until 2pm. If you can help, even for half an hour on these dates, please fill in this form or contact Cate for more information on Cateinnz123@gmail.comWe'd like at least 2 adults on every shift and it would be great to bring your students with you (in SWIS uniform!) to help out. Everything is organised and we have an info sheet but the teachers are busy organising camp and EOTC so this needs to be a parent-led fundraiser.  It's a great opportunity to support your child and the school!

The proposed mural
From left to right - Kupe and his journey to Aotearoa, battling the giant Wheke. Chief Te Wharepouri over looking the cultivation and the local environment.
The centre panel has the school vision with a rainbow for diversity.
The final stage has the Arabic word for achievement next to the old Millard stand at Athletic Park and includes a rugby ball. And finally the word BRAHMAPUR where we get Berhampore from, with a representation of a temple and hindi symbol for wisdom behind.

SWIS Board casual vacancy for a parent representative

We have previously advised that if 10% of the school community wish the board to run a by-election for this position then parents need to advise the Presiding member (chair) by 29 November 2022. Please email the Presiding member on Emma.Rutherford@swis.school.nz.

If less than 10% of the school community requests an election then the board will move to select a parent representative. If you are interested in being considered for selection, please email the Presiding member.

Could your family host an international student?

We have a number of international students looking for a welcoming host family. This is a great opportunity to share your home, culture and family life with another child.

See more details here https://www.swis.school.nz/international-students/

Here are some key points:
  • The student would be in your home for two weeks - 6 to 25 March 2023 (dates tbc)
  • A fee paid to families to cover costs (this will cover the costs incurred for food etc)
  • All adults in the home undertake a police vetting process, and there is a house inspection undertaken by the school.
  • International students must have either their own room or be sharing with a child of the same gender.
If you are interested, then please email Toby Stokes (principal@swis.school.nz). He is happy to answer any questions. See the testimonial below!

"Our family hosted students who visited SWIS from Japan in 2018 and 2019.  We really enjoyed hosting a visitor and getting them to experience life as a teenager in Wellington.  We got to be tourists in our own city as we showed them our favourite parks and cafes.  It also connected us further with other families at SWIS as we communicated in a private group the activities we were doing with our students.  For my oldest child it spurred an interest in studying Japanese and they are learning Japanese at High School.  The programme that they visit through is really well organised and there is a lot of support available. I'm looking forward to hosting a student again in 2023."

Check our Lost Property please!

We have a large amount of lost property in the foyer. If your child has lost something, please have them come and have a look for it and take it home. This is also a reminder to name you child’s clothing. If items are prominently named, we do get them back to students so they don’t end up missing.

Do you know of anyone interested in enrolling at SWIS?

Ask them if they have sent in an enrolment form and if not, then pass on this newsletter to them.  Here is the link to the online enrolment form.
