PRINCIPAL'S PĀNUI

31 October 2022

Dear Parents & Whānau,

For a short week due to Labour Day, last week was certainly quite a week!

I am so proud of our students for the fantastic display of resilience and commonsense.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who supported our Seedling Swap on Labour Weekend. Thank you to Emily for championing this event - see more below.

Congratulations to our 30 students who attended Polyfest in Masterton on Friday and a big thank you to Stephen, Maria, Fananga and Tana who led the group. You did yourselves and our school proud!

Finally, thank you to our students and staff who responded so well both during and after our lockdown situation last Tuesday. As I said earlier in the week, we're very proud of how well everyone followed instructions and stayed sensible and calm. As part of our debriefing and learnings, I'd like to offer our school community this short survey.  If you have reached out to me, and don't have anything else to add, then feel free to skip the survey.  However, if you have not shared your views and ideas then please take a few minutes to fill in the survey.

If you have emailed me and asked for phone numbers to be updated, then this has been done.  If you haven't done this and think it needs to be noted, then please email principal@swis.school.nz with the correct information and I will get this done for you.

Have a great week,

Ngā mihi
Toby Stokes
Principal

Don't forget to check out the school's Facebook Page which has the latest updates about what is going on at school.

STOP PRESS!  Could your family host an international student?

With the borders opening up again, we have a number of international students looking for a welcoming host family. This is a great opportunity to share your home, culture and family life with another child.

See more details here https://www.swis.school.nz/international-students/

If you are interested, then here are some more key points:
  • The student would be in your home for two weeks - 6th March to 25th March 2023 (dates still to be confirmed)
  • There is a fee paid to families to cover costs (this will comfortably cover the costs incurred for food etc
  • All adults in the home undertake a police vetting process, and there is a house inspection - undertaken by the school.
  • International students must have either their own room or be sharing with a child of the same gender.
If you are interested, then please email Toby Stokes (principal@swis.school.nz).  I am happy to answer any questions that you may have about this.

2023 High School experiences

An exciting time for our Year 8 students as their transition to college draws closer! All colleges  will be contacting you - the caregivers - to update you about everything you need to know.  This is, of course, once you have ENROLLED your child.  Please do this ASAP if you haven't already.

These are the dates and details we have for these 3 colleges:

'The Rongotai Experience'
Friday 11 November - the entire day
Your child organises getting to and from the college - they DO NOT come to SWIS first. Please ring the school OR email the office (office@swis.school.nz) to let them know your child is attending. Mufti can be worn. Students must bring their own lunch and drinks.

Wellington High School
Friday 11 November - the afternoon
The college has organised buses to come to SWIS around 12.15pm to take the students to the school for the afternoon.  Buses will then be returning them to SWIS before 3pm. Students must wear uniform.

Wellington East College - 'Taster Morning'
Thursday 24 November - the morning
Your child organises getting to and from the college - they DO NOT come to SWIS first. Please ring the school OR email the office (office@swis.school.nz) to let them know your child is attending. The college is providing buses to bring your child back to SWIS for lunchtime. Students must wear SWIS uniform.

Wellington Boys' College

Successful Seed Swap!
Thank you again to  our fantastic community for showing out and getting involved in our seedling swap last weekend. Special thanks go to Seeds to Feeds. If you are keen on attending more seedling swaps and getting more involved in their garden-to-table kaupapa follow Seeds to Feeds. Huge thanks also to Bunnings Warehouse Lyall Bay, they donated incredibly generously to this event allowing so many more people to get out into their gardens.
At the end of the day we came away having raised over $1300 towards our new greenhouse, thank you again for all of your incredible support. If you'd be keen to be involved in the build or looking after the gardens over summer get in touch with emily.fletcher@swis.school.nz

New drinking fountains are here!

Our shiny new drinking fountains have been installed! Bought using funds raised from Market Day, we are excited to have these new fountains. The remainder of our market day funds will be used to buy PE equipment for students to use during break times.

And more congratulations to...

Xavier joined the 82 strong Wellington team for the Inter-Regional Cross Country race in Nelson. It was a super muddy wet cold day and he placed 4th in the individual race this year. His sub team of 4 x Year 8 boys came 1st earning a gold medal. Wellington dominated all the year groups (Y5-Y8) and retained the Phil Costley Shield for best team points overall and also retained the team relay baton trophy. Congratulations Xavier!

Archie and Molly competed at an Under 12 National Waterpolo competition over the weekend and the Harbour City team they were in came 2nd. Well done!
Come along to the Island Bay School Fair and support one of our great feeder schools. Lots of great bargains, delicious food and fun to be had!
