Plant Cuttings

Dear <<First Name>>,

This is the second part to the experiment of bringing indoors the jalapeno plant from my deck.  I am placing  the plant under grow lights, and taking cuttings from the jalapeno plant for propagation.  This article will discuss the process of taking plant cuttings.
Enjoy,

The reason for taking plant cuttings is to get more plants, that are identical to the plant that you take the cutting from and not have to go through the process of starting from a seed.

You can have a plant that has performed well and has all the traits you like, but to get more of the same plant can prove difficult genetically.  With cuttings you will have the same plant and can have many multiples of the plant if you like.

This is the equipment that I am using to place my cuttings in. An AgroMax humidity dome with heat mat, and a seed and or cutting starter tray, along with LED lights.

First step is to pour 64 ounces of water into the black nursery tray and place the foam inserts into the tray. Let soak for about 15 minutes.

Open the packet of Clonex and squeeze some into a shot glass or I just used a plastic baggie to house about a 2” round area of the rooting gel.

Cut a stem that is at least 4” long, preferably at a 45 degree angle to allow for more surface area for the rooting gel.

Dip the cut side of the stem into the Clonex rooting gel, I put it on pretty thick.

Place the coated cut side of the stem into the planting hole of the seed starter.  Push down so it is in firmly.

Cuttings in Plugs

Place starter plug into the tray, keep additional cuttings spread apart and not touching.

Place the dome onto the tray, with heater pad plugged in.  Close the top vent holes of the dome to maintain humidity.

Sit back for a week or two depending on temperature, and you should start to see some roots.  Leave the LED lights on for at least ten to eighteen hours a day.

As of this writing, no roots on the cuttings yet,  I thought the jalapeno lights might put them in the mood to grow.

As a side note, I thought that the jalapeno plant would probably be dying by now, but instead it has formed new leaves and buds, along with flowers.  Just in time for the winter salsa" I mean solstice.
