Indoor Jalapeno

Dear David,

I have not given up on my jalapeno plant. Last week I purchased an LED grow light and plant food that should help survival.  If all else fails I am prepared to take cuttings.
Enjoy,

I know this is not the time of year to try and keep a jalapeno plant alive, I should have uprooted and placed on my compost heap at least a month or two back.

Instead I saw this as a learning situation.  This would be a good time to see what effect an LED grow light might have on this plant.  Maybe it can live long enough to take cuttings and attempt to grow them.

It is not that this particular plant is that special to me. I can’t even eat jalapenos, they are way too hot for me!

The thought occurred to me that I have not done cuttings from plants since botany class back in the mid 70's. Might be fun to see what happens.

When I bought the LED light I also bought a four foot grow light stand, 7-4-10 liquid plant food for hydroponics,  and an Agromax seed and cutting starter tray with humidity dome and heat mat.

While I did major in biology and chemistry in college, this is not a “Breaking Bad” episode - just a proof of concept.

The jalapeno is in a medium clay pot with potting soil and vermiculite as the substrate.

Within five days I have two blooms and two little jalapenos forming.  I knew the plant would not make it because I keep my house too cool, so that is where the starter kit with dome and heat mat comes into play.

After I take the cuttings I will put the emphasis on maintaining the kit. Maybe I’ll have a leg up on spring planting.

More to follow on this saga….

What I have learned about the products so far.

The four-foot stand was not hard to put together but the legs come out of the attachment at a slight angle. Not sure yet if that is pilot error or something amiss with the product.

Also, I purchased hanging supports for the LED, but they are not needed for this fixture because it is extremely light weight.  A normal Florissant fixture would have required these attachments.

The rings that the LED attaches to are like a key chain that you can thread the snap on brackets onto the support.

The fixture came with the wrong type of plugin to attach to.  I called the hydroponics store and they said they were more than happy to send the right one to me.

It has been a week and no replacement cord for the LED has not arrived. I adapted the LED plug with the pigtail cord that came with the lamp. This works, but is not what I paid for.

It is now the second week the plant has been under the LED light and new shoots are appearing. That is what I was hoping for. These are what I will try cuttings from along with the other established branches.

I think I will look for Christmas jalapeno lights.

Quick Tip

1) Cut at a 45 degree to increase surface area for the root all.

2) Space your cuttings so they do not touch.

3) Keep moist and warm under a humidity dome.

4) Once you see roots coming out of the pod, the plant is ready to place in a hydroponic grower.

5) Try not to shock plant with temperature or too much light.
