Syrian Refugee Crisis

Emergency Relief

Since 2011, civil war in Syria has left 12.2 million people in need of assistance and created one of the largest refugee crises in history. Eight million people have been forced from their homes inside Syria and more than 4 million are either living in neighbouring countries, or making the perilous journey to Europe in search of a new life.

Of the 4 million Syrian refugees, approximately 1.2 million are living in neighbouring Lebanon where Caritas has been supporting those in need through development and humanitarian aid programmes since the outbreak of the conflict.

Our work in Lebanon is part of a regional Caritas response that also includes supplying food, water and shelter to desperate refugee families in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and further afield in European countries.

3 Hours for Syria campaign
Students in solidarity with Syrian refugees

The '3 Hours for Syria' campaign is a fantastic project developed through the hard work of Year 10 students at St Mary’s College in Auckland to raise funds and awareness about the desperate plight of Syrian refugees in the Middle East.

St Mary’s College is challenging other schools to join '3 Hours for Syria'. Rosmini College and St Peter's College have taken up that challenge.

By working for just 3 hours and asking that the money they earn be donated to Caritas, students from these three schools are showing they care about the people affected by this ongoing crisis and doing something practical to help them.

Development

In Nepal we work with the rural poor and have a strong focus on empowering women farmers. This programme works with 17 cooperatives in five districts and many of the people we work with are subsistence farmers.

As members of a local cooperative, rural farmers receive training in small business management, raising livestock and vegetable farming.

Using these skills to grow vegetables and raise livestock means that families are able to eat better and any extra can be sold for additional income to pay for healthcare, education and basic household needs.

Advocacy

Caritas launches the first of its annual State of the Environment for Oceania reports on October 4, 2015 (St Francis Day) in Christchurch. This follows on from our foundation report Small yet strong, released last year.

This year's report highlights that in 2015 the region experienced unusually severe weather emergencies, and calls for governments to do more to address issues around coastal erosion and sea level rise.
