Debbie Wells Completes First Marathon
Futures Rehabilitation Center Production Supervisor Debbie Wells competed in her first 26.2 mile marathon on Sunday, September 15, 2013 with her son Jared and his wife Melissa at the Erie Marathon at Presque Isle State Park.
At the half way point, Debbie felt good and confident, but was slowed down at mile 16 by a previous ruptured disk injury that affected her legs. After receiving medical attention from Melissa, Debbie continued with the race with son Jared running beside her. Debbie completed the marathon with grit and determination with her family’s encouragement and cheers, who had gathered a quarter mile from the finish line, including her son Jacob and grandson Levi who ran along the sidelines.
Debbie has completed 3 half marathons previously and specialty trained for this marathon for over three months running most of her runs on a treadmill. Completing the marathon fulfills one of Debbie’s bucket list items and includes her with the 1% of the population who has completed a marathon. Debbie’s next running challenge is to set a new personal best time in a half marathon.
The Erie Marathon is a USATF (USA Track & Field) certified marathon and is used by runners to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Local marathon runner Terry Stanley of Eldred, PA holds the Erie Marathon record set in 1978 at 2:19:27. Over 2500 runners competed in the 2013 marathon, half marathon and many other distance races.
Deb’s team at Futures Rehabilitation congratulates Deb on her marathon accomplishment.
