Message from the President

We hope that you participated in the many sessions, roundtables, discussions, and networking opportunities that composed the 2014 conference. EERA gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the University of North Florida, Valdosta State University, McGraw Hill Higher Education, Columbus State University, and Provalis Research in making the 2014 conference a success. Many thanks to the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville’ staff for their spectacular work.  We also appreciate the contributions of our Board Members and the graduate student volunteers.

On a personal note, it was a pleasure to interact with EERA attendees—both new attendees and returners. At EERA, one of our core values is in mentoring our graduate students. I encourage you to stay in touch with graduate students and professional members throughout the year. Share your mentoring stories and individual successes with us. We look forward to sharing and celebrating them with you. Who knows…you may be featured in an upcoming newsletter!

Currently, we are preparing for our summer board meeting and for the 2015 conference. If you are interested in getting more involved in EERA consider running for a position on the Board of Directors in the upcoming election. Positions will run from February 2015 through 2017. Alternatively you can help/shadow an existing Board member to learn more. We are also looking for nominations for our Lifetime Achievement Award and for a JRE Editor who can begin this Fall (2014). More information can be found within this newsletter. We hope you enjoy the conference highlights featured!

Best regards,

Michele Parker

Message from the President-Elect

Mike Miller, President-Elect, greets Dave Shannon and Abbott Packard at conference registration.

We had a fantastic time in Jacksonville at this year’s conference, including one sunny, 80-degree day that was perfect Florida weather!  We also had two great keynote speakers on critical issues facing our collective roles in education, and a great turnout of faculty, administrators, and students.  I especially want to thank everyone who participated in the conference, including session chairs, graduate students who volunteered at the front desk, and some all-around impressive work by my fellow EERA Board members!

As we finish out the spring semester, it is time to begin thinking about the 2015 conference in Sarasota, and while none of us are excited to think about next winter, it is fun to think about our return to the beach, visiting the Ringling museum of art, and strolling over the causeway to St. Armands Circle. The call for proposals will be announced in September with a closing date at the end of October. What a great time to think about panels, symposia, and round table discussions in addition to the many excellent research papers that are presented!

We also have the very important task of assembling a new slate of Board members for our upcoming election this fall. We are happy to take nominations and Michele and I are happy to have discussions with anyone who might be interested.  We are looking for nominees for the following positions:  Secretary, Vice President for Conference Planning, Director of Communications, Director of Divisions and SIGS, Director of Membership, Director of Student Services, and Director of Awards and Sponsorships.

This is your Association, and it is only as strong as we make it together, so please take this opportunity to get involved!

Mike Miller

Call for Nominations for Elected Positions

The EERA Board of Directors is now accepting applications and nominations for several positions on the Board.  The election for the positions will take place in the middle of the Fall semester, and terms will be for two years, beginning with the 2015 conference in Sarasota.

Director of Student Services:  The Director of Student Services will be responsible for designing, implementing, and coordinating conference sessions and EERA activities that enhance the membership and professional development of students.

EERA Welcomes New Board Member

George Watson, Professor and Program Director for the Educational Foundations and Technology Program in the College of Education and Professional Development at Marshall University, has been appointed to serve as Treasurer of the EERA Board of Directors. George will begin serving in this position immediately.

“I have an undergraduate degree in Business Management and worked in the private sector for a year before returning to school to pursue a Master’s in Teaching.  As a faculty member I have worked as a program director, chair of the Marshall University School of Education, NCATE coordinator, and Interim Director of Clinical Experiences, so I am very familiar with both working with budgets and completing annual reports.  I have been a professor at Marshall since 2001 and attended my first EERA conference in 1998.  My doctorate is in instructional technology.”

Please join us in welcoming George to this position!

2014 Post-Conference Survey Results

Jennifer L. Brown, Vice-President of Conference Planning, with Roger Briscoe and Dennis King

At the conclusion of this year’s conference, a post-conference survey was distributed via email to all current EERA members on February 24, 2014.  A total of 69 members completed the survey.  The respondents included 8 (12%) student members and 61 (88%) professional members.  Of those respondents, 97% attended the 2014 Annual Conference in Jacksonville, and 85% of the respondents plan to attend the 2015 Annual Conference, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota, Florida.

When asked about the services provided by the Hyatt Regency in Jacksonville, the respondents indicated that the front desk staff, food, housekeeping, and conference facilities were satisfactory.  Using a four-point Likert type scale with 1 representing Very Dissatisfied and 4 representing Very Satisfied, the front desk staff received a mean rating of 3.69 with a standard deviation of 0.56.  The food earned a mean rating of 3.43 with a standard deviation of 0.76. Housekeeping was given a mean rating of 3.64 with a standard deviation of 0.59, and conference facilities were given a mean rating of 3.44 with a standard deviation of 0.73.  These ratings were higher with less variance compared the 2013 post-conference results.  Some reasons listed for dissatisfaction were the size of the hotel and the “plain” food at the hotel.

In terms of conference organization, slightly more than 63% of the respondents indicated that the paper sessions as the most valuable aspect of this year’s conference, and 17% of the respondents indicated the symposia sessions as the second most valuable aspect.  Regarding the format of the conference program, 81% indicated they utilized the hard copy received at the registration desk, 63% of the respondents indicated they utilized the downloadable PDF program from the EERA website, and 21% indicated they utilized the mobile device app.  When asked about pre-conference workshops, 34% of the respondents indicated they would be interested, and the primary topics included research methods and grant writing.  When asked about EERA-hosted webinars during the academic year, 43% of the respondents indicated they would be interested, and the suggested topics included data analysis, conference presentation follow-ups, recent trends in research methods, and publishing.  Some comments and suggestions were given about the conference program layout, communication about conference details, and increased involvement of Divisions and SIGs.  At the next summer board meeting, the Board will review those comments and suggestions along with the quantitative survey data as they plan for the 2015 conference.
