Message from the President

Can you believe the fall is here already!?  I hope all of you had a chance to relax a little bit over the summer, especially with all of the changes facing higher education.  If your institution is anything like mine, there are constant conversations about enrollment, retention, recruitment, more grant funding, and whether it is good or bad I do not know, but parents of undergraduates.  I think it’s a great thing that we get a chance to get together once a year to talk about these kinds of issues!

Included in this newsletter is the official Call for Proposals for the Conference.  The Conference this year is in the very capable hands of Dr. Shawn Fitzgerald of Widener University.  EERA has a wonderful history and relationship with Widener, and I am so very pleased that we are once again able to connect with that fine institution.

Shawn is responsible for collecting, evaluating, and scheduling proposals for presentation at the conference, and he has an absolutely wonderful venue to work with:  Hilton Head Island.  Getting to Hilton Head Island and the Westin is as easy as flying into Savannah and taking the shuttle, or flying directly to the airport on the island with taxi service.  As so many of you will recall, the hotel sits on a beautiful beach, there are too many golf courses to count, and tennis is also available.  I’ve personally been to those outlet malls more than once as well!  And, I can’t let the opportunity go without remembering heading to dinner with a group that included Glenn Nelson from Pittsburgh and Auburn’s Cindy Reed and asking John Cougar Mellencamp for directions!

We have reinstituted an important position on the Board this year:  Director of Hospitality.  We have long-time and well respected Roger Briscoe in this role, and his responsibility is to assist conference attendees in having a good experience, whether this is someone’s first or fifteenth conference! Roger will have a hospitality room open for casual conversation and to get a little work done!

At the summer Board meeting, three new awards were also approved and the instructions for nominations are included here (and on our new website).  The outstanding Director of Awards Jessica Bucholz is coordinating these, and they include the Emerging Scholar Award, the Senior Scholar Award, and the EERA Distinguished Service Award.

The Association is in great hands with a very talented Board of Directors, and I hope to see all of you in the warm sun of Hilton Head this February!

Sincerely,

Michael T. Miller
President

Message from the President-Elect

I can’t think of a better venue to be at in the middle of winter then the Westin Resort Hotel in Hilton Head Island, SC. While you certainly could spend your entire conference enjoying Hilton Head’s 12 miles of beautiful beaches, or the conference hotel’s numerous pools and hot tubs, we hope you join us in what is shaping up to be an exciting and engaging conference.

The conference will again begin on Thursday morning with sessions running all day Thursday and Friday. Keynote Speakers will be featured during our opening session on Thursday morning as well as our lunch session on Friday. Back by popular demand will be our Three-Minute Thesis Session and our Graduate Student Luncheon to be held on Thursday. Each day of the conference will conclude with an opportunity to socialize and mingle with your colleagues at the conference receptions---the always popular President’s Welcome Reception will be held on Thursday night followed by our general conference reception on Friday.  On Saturday morning we will have the EERA Board of Directors meeting, and if necessary, we may hold several concurrent sessions concluding no later than 10 AM.

Hilton Head has many fun and lively restaurants ranging from fine seafood restaurants to trendy pizza joints. While some of the best restaurants are located off the beaten path, head to Coligny Plaza or Harbor Town if you’re looking for lots of restaurant options in one place---some of the best shopping is found in these areas as well! If you are interested in enjoying a night out there are numerous areas around town that offer a variety of entertainment venues within walking distance of one another. Oh, and there is a golf course or two!

Please contact me if you would like to serve as a Session Chair at this year’s conference (smfitzgerald@widener.edu)!

See you in Hilton Head this February!
Shawn Fitzgerald

Call for Proposals

39th Annual Conference of the
Eastern Educational Research Association
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
February 17-20, 2016

Proposals are now being accepted for the 39th Annual Conference of the Eastern Educational Research Association, to be held at the Westin Resort Hotel, Hilton Head Island, SC, on February 17-20, 2016.  The EERA conference has been held each spring for nearly 40 years, and brings together the leading scholars from the eastern United States.  The refereed conference typically hosts over 300 scholars, meaning that the conference is small enough to network and connect with colleagues, but is large enough to offer a wide range of ideas, research methods, and topics.

Researchers may submit for consideration original proposals that have not been published or presented at another professional meeting. Proposals will be submitted through the online registration center on the EERA website, and if the proposal is accepted, the lead author must pay all conference fees and be present at the conference.  Research Paper formats require that the presenter prepare a paper for distribution at the conference.

Original proposed research presentations are to be based on completed work, or work to be completed before the annual conference. Proposals for the upcoming 2016 meeting will be accepted from Tuesday September 8th until Friday November 6th, 2015. The program will consist of papers and other formats for educational research presentations that have been accepted by the review committee. All submissions will be reviewed by at least two scholars or practitioners in the field of education.

Submitting a Proposal

A proposal may be submitted only once. An individual may participate in a maximum of three sessions, excluding invited addresses, business meetings, and award activities. EERA will provide overhead projectors for proposals accepted as Research Paper presentations; other audio-visual or equipment needs must be arranged by the participant.

Submitted proposals should be 2000 words or less and should summarize the major objectives or focus, the theoretical perspective, research methods or techniques, data sources, results, conclusions, and educational or scientific significance of the work. Electronic copies of the proposal must be submitted using key words for review. Each submission should include the title of the proposal and author's name, institutional affiliation, mailing address as you want it to appear in the program and on the Web version of the program (including zip code). Please include a phone number (including area code) and e-mail address.

Session Formats

Research Papers
Description: Research paper proposals are structured synopses or completed data-based studies that utilize any variety of quantitative or qualitative methodological approaches. Theoretical papers are acceptable. Papers not meeting these criteria (e.g. literature reviews) should be submitted under another format. The proposed paper should be appropriate for submission to a refereed journal.

Evaluation Criteria: Paper proposals will be evaluated according to: (a) the significance of the problem or issue to the field; (b) the originality of the work; (c) the adequacy of the theoretical/conceptual framework; (d) appropriateness of the mode of inquiry; (e) the rigor and accuracy of the analysis of the data; (f) clarity of the written exposition of ideas, analyses, and arguments; and (g) reasonableness of stated conclusions and implications.

Symposia
Description: Symposia are thematic, integrated dialogues between session participants about a clearly identified theme or topic. This format allows a team of researchers or practitioners to present or review scholarly perspectives on issues. The format is not intended as an opportunity to present papers that have not gone through a review process. Rather, symposia should provide attendees with an opportunity to hear presenters engage in dialogue amongst themselves as well as with attendees about cutting-edge research, practice, theory building, or policy development.

Evaluation Criteria: Symposia proposals will be evaluated on: (a) originality; (b) clarity of topic; (c) significance of topic and/or relevance to EERA members, (d) organization and coherence of individual presentations, (e) range of knowledge and points of view represented by presenters; and (f) opportunities for audience participation.

Roundtables
Description: Roundtables may be proposed on any topic, but are best suited for small group discussions intended to advance, enhance, or share information about research projects that are still in progress. Roundtables are also a useful format for discussion of sharply or narrowly focused topics of policy, practice, professional, or theoretical concerns. Proposals may be submitted that are for one roundtable only or for a group of related round tables.

Evaluation Criteria: Roundtable proposals will be evaluated on: (a) the significance of the topic/issue/ problem to the field; (b) clarity of objectives and intended outcomes of the session; (c) potential for stimulating scholarly discussion, (d) originality, and (e) methods planned to engage participants.

Posters
Description: Poster sessions combine the graphic display of materials with the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of the research throughout the session.

Evaluation Criteria: Poster session proposals will be evaluated on: (a) the significance of the topic/issue/problem to the field; (b) clarity of objectives and intended outcomes of the session; (c) potential for stimulating scholarly discussion, (d) originality, and (e) methods planned to engage participants.

ALL PROPOSALS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2015.

Message from the Director of Divisions - SIGs

As the summer meanders to a close and our students return with their curiosities, EERA is making plans and possibilities. The past couple of years have been productive for EERA Divisions and SIGs. We have cleaned up our membership rolls, reconnected with past Chairs of Divisions and SIGs and opened up new opportunities for our members and the organization by recruiting new Chairs for several Divisions and Sigs. We have even added the new Complexity SIG and reestablished communication with others in the organization. As we continue to grow and move forward, we can only do so with the help of supportive members like you. Things we are working on include: developing membership, planning the conference, and sundry other opportunities for the organization to showcase the talent of its members. We hope you can be a part of the evolution of the organization.

As you make your plans for the coming year, we hope that you will consider attending our annual conference and getting involved in one of the Divisions or SIGs offered. A list of Divisions and SIGs can be found on
our webpage. Even if you cannot make it to the conference, you can become part of the greater conversation through participation in a Division or SIG.

We also need to know if any Division or SIGs plan to hold a special session for anything or have special room needs at the conference.  Please contact me
williamsw@concord.edu if you have room or space needs for your Division or SIG.

As you can see, we are already working on the conference and on growing membership and on assisting our colleagues in various ways. We hope that you are willing to help us in growing the organization and aiding in meeting the needs of our members.

Have a wonderful school year and thank you for helping us make EERA a better organization.

Sincerely,
Willy Williams
Director of Divisions and SIGs

Call for Papers
Journal of Research in Education

The Journal of Research in Education (JRE) is a peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for sharing scholarship among researchers and practitioners in education. The Journal encourages the submission of empirical and methodological manuscripts. JRE accepts manuscripts for review and possible publication in all areas of education from faculty, graduate students, and professionals working in the field.

Click here for the current issue of the journal.

Manuscript Format

Manuscripts should be formatted as an MS Word document using 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced with 1-½ inch margins on all sides. The author's name, contact information, and institutional affiliation should appear on the title page only. Do not include identifying information in the text or as headers or footers to ensure masked review. An abstract of 100-150 words and three to five keywords should follow the title page. The title should be no longer than 15 words. Submissions should conform to the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Manuscripts that do not conform to the publication guidelines will be returned to the author. We prefer manuscripts of 20-25 pages in length, including references, tables, figures, title page, and abstract.

A cover letter must accompany each submission indicating that the manuscript is not currently being considered for publication and will not be submitted elsewhere during the JRE review process. It must also include complete contact information (e.g., e-mail address, mailing address, and phone number) for the corresponding author.

We encourage authors to submit work free of errors. Lengthy, improperly formatted manuscripts and article topics outside the scope of the JRE will be screened upon arrival. Appropriate manuscripts will be submitted to blind review. Editorial revisions made by the JRE staff may be necessary to produce a more concise, readable article. Manuscripts will be acknowledged upon receipt. The review process takes 60-90 days.

Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts are accepted in electronic form to accelerate the review process. Send the manuscript to mtmille@uark.edu as an email attachment.
