Message from the President

Welcome to the spring!  Here at the University of Arkansas, we are just a few short weeks away from commencement and the beginning of summer, and with that comes some well-deserved time off.  Some of those people getting a break will be your excellent EERA Board of Directors who worked so hard to make the 2015 Annual Conference a huge success.  With about 300 attendees, even the cooler temperatures did not dampen the mood of the conference.  We even had one of our conference participants blog about the outstanding keynote by New College Provost Stephen Miles.

And as summer quickly approaches, your Board is gearing up for our next annual meeting to be held on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.  My first EERA conference was in Hilton Head in 1992 and I always enjoy going back.  Our Program Chair this year is EERA President Elect Shawn Fitzgerald who is currently the Dean of the School of Education, Innovation, and Continuing Studies at Widener University.  Shawn will be very ably assisted by Southern Connecticut’s Beena Achhpal who is the Director of Student Services and Director of Conference Special Programs Sharon Valente, a long time EERA member and supporter who is now our western most member, working at Marymount California University.  And of course we are thrilled that Jennifer Brown from Columbus State is reprising her role for the next two years as the Vice President of Conference Planning.  Every time you have a cup of coffee or get a drink ticket at the conference, it is because of Jennifer’s hard work.

As an Association, we are all interested in trying new programs and ideas, and even setting up special events during the course of the year.  We cannot try new ideas, though, unless we get them from you – those of you who make the Association such as success and welcoming body.  Please feel free to suggest new ideas, directions, and activities!

Enjoy this beautiful spring weather, take some time to tell us on the EERA Board your ideas, and take advantage of this opportunity to recharge your batteries before the new year begins!

Best wishes,

Michael Miller

Summary of the Post-Conference Survey Results
Jennifer L. Brown

At the conclusion of this year’s conference, a post-conference survey was distributed via email to all current EERA members on March 2, 2015. A total of 112 members completed the survey.  The respondents included 39 (35%) student members and 73 (65%) professional members. Of those respondents, 82% of the respondents plan to attend the 2016 Annual Conference, which will be held in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

When asked about the services provided by the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota, the respondents indicated that the front desk staff, food, housekeeping, and conference facilities were satisfactory.  Using a four-point Likert type scale with 1 representing Very Dissatisfied and 4 representing Very Satisfied, the front desk staff received a mean rating of 3.59 with a standard deviation of 0.73  The food earned a mean rating of 3.36 with a standard deviation of 0.87. Housekeeping was given a mean rating of 3.58 with a standard deviation of 0.71, and conference facilities were given a mean rating of 3.61 with a standard deviation of 0.66.  These ratings were similar to the results from the 2014 conference in Jacksonville, Florida.

In terms of conference organization, 64% of the respondents indicated that the paper sessions as the most valuable aspect of this year’s conference, and 20% of the respondents indicated the roundtable sessions as the second most valuable aspect.  Some comments and suggestions were given about the conference program including contact information of presenters, communication about reception menus prior to the event, and lack of interest with symposia sessions.  At the next summer board meeting, the Board will review those comments and suggestions along with the quantitative survey data as they plan for the 2016 conference.
