Message from the President

Welcome to the summer!  As our semesters end and some of us move on research assignments, others to teaching summer school, and yet others to vacation, I want to thank all of you for your wonderful support during this past year.  We had a fantastic conference in February, and under new leadership, the Journal of Research in Education is off to a great start!

Those of us on the Board have been working throughout the spring on mostly technical issues, including a new software system for conference submissions and for journal article submissions.  We’ve also been working to confirm a 2019 conference location, and we should be ready for that announcement by the time the Call for Proposals comes out in September.

As a reminder, our Call for Proposals typically comes out around Labor Day (closing in November), and we have had such a tremendous positive response to our conference location, Richmond, that I encourage you to submit your proposals early!

There are two important messages that I must also convey from the Board as we move into the summer.  First, all of us on the Board send a huge THANK YOU to our very own Dr. Jennifer Brown, Vice President for Conference Planning.  Jennifer has been an outstanding Board member and an excellent steward of the Association, and with the coming birth of her second child, she is going to be stepping down from her Board position.  We will miss her and her great work incredibly.  I am equally as thrilled to thank Dr. Jessica Bucholz for stepping up into this role.  Most of you know Jennifer as the Director of Awards and Sponsorships, a position she has been great in for the past several years.  Her willingness to step into this role and serve in both positions is nothing short of valiant!

I also want to remind the membership that this is an election year for the Association.  This means that beginning this summer, Board members will be reaching out to members to ask them to consider running in the December election for a position on the Board.  Most positions are a two year term, and we have been fielding a number of nominations already.  We will issue a Call for Nominations in September and then contact those who are nominated (and yes, of course you can nominate yourself!).  The election will be the first two weeks in December, and new Board members will take office at the Spring 2017 Annual Conference.

All of us on the Board appreciate you as members, and remind you that we are here to serve you.  If you have ideas, issues, concerns, or just want to visit about where EERA is or where it is going, please contact me (mtmille@uark.edu; 479-575-3582).

Have a great summer and start on those proposals for the conference now!

Best wishes,
Michael Miller

Summary of the Post-Conference Survey Results
Jennifer L. Brown

At the conclusion of this year’s conference, a post-conference survey was distributed via email to all current EERA members on February 22, 2016.  A total of 149 members completed the survey, which is the largest pool of participants for the post-conference survey.  The respondents included 55 (37%) student members and 94 (63%) professional members.  Of those respondents, 77% of the respondents plan to attend the 2017 Annual Conference, which will be held in Richmond, Virginia.

When asked about the services provided by the Westin Resort in Hilton Head, the respondents indicated that the front desk staff, food, housekeeping, and conference facilities were satisfactory.  Using a four-point Likert type scale with 1 representing Very Dissatisfied and 4 representing Very Satisfied, the front desk staff received a mean rating of 3.64 with a standard deviation of 0.63  The food earned a mean rating of 3.12 with a standard deviation of 0.84. Housekeeping was given a mean rating of 3.62 with a standard deviation of 0.63, and conference facilities were given a mean rating of 3.52 with a standard deviation of 0.67.  These ratings were similar to the results from the 2015 conference in Sarasota, Florida, except the food rating was about 7% lower in Hilton Head.

In terms of conference organization, 46% of the respondents indicated that the paper sessions as the most valuable aspect of this year’s conference, and 15% of the respondents indicated the symposia sessions as the second most valuable aspect.  Some comments and suggestions were given about the conference included the expense of the hotel, limited supplies at breakfast, and issues with projector connections.  At the next summer board meeting, the Board will review those comments and suggestions along with the quantitative survey data as they plan for the 2017 conference.

Call for Reviewers for the Journal of Research in Education

The Journal of Research in Education is currently seeking reviewers.

Qualified reviewers will be able to demonstrate a strong scholarly background relevant to their areas of methodological and content expertise, including citations for at least three scholarly works that demonstrate contributions to the field.

We are also very interested in including doctoral students in the peer review process; doctoral student reviewers who do not have three examples of scholarly work will still be considered.
