What's New

This week we’re highlighting pop-ups happenin’ this weekend, sharing what to do on Halloween, and introducing you to two cool new (mystery) friends.

Culture Corner

Our love for old New York is no secret, so we are obvs so excited about the opening of the Carlyle’s newest spot to eat and drink: Dowling’s. Expect timeless New York favorites for brekkie, lunch, dinner and ofco - brunch. We are anticipating our first visit to check out the dining room that exhibits over 180 artworks.

Omg, cool friend Susan Alexandra’s new store in the LES is officially open!!! Swing by the space at 33 Orchard street for the most fun beaded objects and ~~~good vibes~~~

Over the last few months, we’ve been noticing a peculiar trend. So many cool new things in...Midtown? Hear us out, from the two most recent Beverly’s popups to the opening of Lodi, it seems as if the death of big chains has made way for small, independent businesses to once again have a place north of 14th street. It seems like we’re not alone in thinking Midtown is cool again: The New York Times food critic, Pete Wells, feels the same. Read where to eat in Midtown here.

Vintage & Tattoo Pop-up

Erin Miller of Paradise Suites and tattoo artist, Vicky Florio are hosting a vintage goods sale/tattoo collab pop-up. The best part? you can get the available pieces…as a tattoo?! AND if you get the tattoo, you leave with the item as well...brilliant! Stop by tomorrow from 10a-6p out of Vicky's studio at 59 Gardner ave in Bushwick!

Brownstone Botanical Pop-up

Our favorite stoop-centered florist, Brownstone Botanical, is back! This time popping up at Su’juk in Clinton Hill. Stop by this Sunday ...Halloween... from 12-5 for flowers, fun, and tarot readings from Thameka Nicole.

Are you tired of asking yourself what an adult should do on Halloween weekend? Look no further. Here are our recs for a weekend full of spook in NYC.

Visit Brooklyn’s largest cemetery, Greenwood. We’re talking 478 acres of art, history & nature…what’s not to like? Also, if you walk up to the top of the park’s hill, you can see the city from the highest point in Brooklyn.

View Cobble Hill artist- Jane Greengold’s annual Pumpkin impalements installation.

Attend Socrates Sculpture Park’s Halloween Harvest Festival. Expect jazz, doggie costume contests, & pumpkin’ carving.

Join Hester Street Fair at Seaport for their Halloween market. Come dressed up, hungry & ready to shop small bizz.

Cool Friends:
Anna Brettschneider & Garrett Albury aka

We’ve been doing this newsletter for 86 weeks now and we’ve been told time and time again to show our faces a little more around here. The final push came from Janie Korn last week at her show opening, and when New York’s resident candle genius tells you to do something, you do it! So, here we are! AB & G, the little fingers who type type this email every week :)

A little bit about us:

Outside of this fun project, we both work full time as designers. Anna, as a textile designer & interior stylist, and Garrett as a UX & Graphic designer. We’re also roommates / luvas <3 who do all the fun things together and never get tired of it!

Why we started

It all happened on the M train while speeding above Myrtle Ave with our friend Sara. We wanted a way to share all our view of New York, one that wasn’t simply big brands & Broadway. What started as a weekly newsletter to our close friends has grown to a community of nearly 4500 readers (ty)! It’s been fun to use coolstuff as a way to learn more about our city, connect with other creatives, and tell all our friends about the newest cool thing to try.

Our favorite part about the New York creative community:

Almost everyone you come across is kind and helpful. A lot of our cool friend features are even crowdsourced by other creatives lifting each other up. In New York, everybody eats. Plus you all give us an endless amount of events and shows to write about because you are endlessly creative.

What's inspiring us right now:

Annie & Josef Albers. Martinis. The writings of Stefan Zweig. Handwritten cards. Carla Lalli’s new cookbook, That Sounds So Good. Fall floral arrangements. Gallery Openings. Afternoon espresso breaks. Monet’s kitchen. Fresh bread. Newspapers. Haydn’s concertos.
