Twilight Tour to Nancy Hathatway and Greg Peterson’s Tree Farm at Soap Creek
The Benton County Chapter of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association is hosting our first Twilight Tour of the season at Nancy & Greg’s tree farm.
Join us for an informal walk and discussion as we learn about the evolution of this amazing property.  We will see Douglas-fir stands of various ages and stocking rates as we move across the landscape.
Nancy and Greg will share their experience with chemical and mechanical weed and brush control, stand pruning and thinning, and recovering from ice storm damage as they seek to maximize the timber productivity of their forest.
Date: Thursday, June 2, 2022
Time: 6 pm
Directions: site is located above the beautiful Soap Creek Valley.  Coming from Highway 99, take Tampico Road west 1.2 miles to Soap Creek Road.  Head south (left) and proceed 1.6 miles to an open orange gate on the left. Follow the rocked road a quarter-mile to the meeting point.  If coming by way of Lewisburg saddle, you will make a sharp right off Sulphur Springs road onto Soap Creek Rd, and drive 3.2 miles to the orange gate that will be on your right. (NOTE:  There are numerous orange OSU gates on Soap Creek Rd.  Please watch your odometer, and look for OSWA event signs at the gate).
Walking will be mostly flat ground on rocked surfaces or through cleared paths in the woods.
Linn County chapter of Oregon Small Woodlands Association Tour of Bogwood Tree Farm managed by Shirley Jolliff and Lee Peterman.
Lee and Shirley were the Linn County tree farmers of the year in 2020 and their farm was featured in the fall, 2020 issue of Northwest Woodlands.
Bogwood is an 80-acre former Willamette/Weyerhaeuser woodlot, clear cut in 1996 and replanted in 1997-98. The planned tour will ramble through the wet-prairie restoration (the "bog" of Bogwood) -- hopefully the wildflowers will cooperate and still be in bloom; and continue through lightly thinned stands of Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir -- part of the ongoing efforts for forest resilience and fire resistance in an NRCS EQIP contract.
Demonstrations of battery/electric equipment, chainsaws and sawmill; including a new custom-built log arch will follow the tour.
Refreshments and healthy snack items will be provided. Sensible footwear recommended as ground conditions may be wet. No pets, please.
Date: Saturday, June 4th,
Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 PM
Location: 35488 Ede Road, Scio, OR
Directions: From junction with Hwy 226 drive 4.7 miles east on Fish Hatchery Drive then turn right on Ede road. Drive 1.2 miles on Ede road to Bogwood farm which is on your right. Tree farm signs will help direct you.

Forest landowners who attend this event and are not members of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association will be offered FREE MEMBERSHIP for the remainder of this year. This is the second of four Tree Farm Tours to be held in Linn County in the summer of 2022.
