“Logging A to Z” with Terry Lamers
Hosted by the Marion-Polk Chapter of OSWA
Terry has all sorts of experience and is happy to let us know many things he finds important that we might not get elsewhere. What to do before you log, during and after logging too. This will have to do with thinning, clear cutting, log markets, brands, log sizes and perhaps even taxation issues. There will be plenty of time for questions. So, if you have considered logging or having some logging done, OR NOT, this presentation and others in this quarter will give you more to base your important decision on

Time: 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Locations:
- In person: Starker Forests Classroom, Peavy Forest Science Center Room 117, reception to follow

Lecture: Log and Lumber Scanning Technology
Speaker: Patrick Freeman, Group CTO, Microtec, Corvallis
Patrick Freeman is Group Chief Technology Officer of Microtec in Corvallis. He will speak on using artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically grade lumber as well as the use of CT scanning for logs. CT scanning enables mills to see “inside” logs to optimize cutting of logs into lumber. It is common now for sawmills to use laser-based scanning systems to estimate volume recovery. Microtec’s systems allow mills to optimize for value recovery as well given that these systems enable lumber grade to be determined prior to sawing.
