Summer 2015 News: CSA Week 3

 Radishes at Root 'N Roost Farm

On Sunday Sean will be giving a Renewable Energy Tour  from noon to 1pm - learn about the incredible incentives availble to NYS residents until the ned of 2016 that can help you pay for up to 75% of a solar electric (on and off-grid!) and solar hot water systems, as well as how to build composting hot water, use solar passively, & veggie oil use for fuel!

"Bountiful Bags" are BACK! Order a $25 bag full of the same contents as our CSA (only slightly smaller), pickup at our farm.

We'll be hosting a Yoga Class this Friday at 6:30pm and Sunday at 9:30am with certified instructor LeeAnna Maniace, please register if you wish to attend, $10pp. We host the yoga classes in our back woods under the canopy of our sugar maples and american cherry trees. Listen to the sounds of the farm while you connect with your physical self!

CSA Share Contents this week: Garlic scapes, arugula, wood sorrel, romaine lettuce, bok choy, radishes, mustard greens, lambs quarters, beet greens,a selection of basil varieties (sweet thai, lemon, genovese and italian large leaf), garlic chives, mint, and a bouquet of flowers. Please let us know if you cannot pickup, or if you have to reschedule your pickup so we can refrigerate your share!

What do I do with all of these greens?!? We know very well that mountains of greens can get over whelming so here are a few suggestions for your CSA bag menu this week: Arugula pesto pasta, fruit salad with shredded basil, sauteed mustard greens served over cheesy polenta,stir-fried bok choy, lambs quarters and beet greens with your favorite grain or noodles, if you're adventurous add in chicken or veggie broth to make a warming soup. Come attend one of our food preservation classes and learn how to put away excess produce so that you can enjoy it right through the winter!

Chicken and Duck eggs: Please order eggs a week ahead of time to ensure that we can satisfy your needs, they're selling out faster than the birds can lay! Remember to bring back your egg cartons, there's no such thing as waste!
 
Whole Roaster Chickens Now Available! Get an organically grown whole roaster chicken from our farmstand. our birds are raised on organic Poulin Grain, free range and forage, and are rotated around our farm weekly. This is the way chicken should taste!

Did you know that our Farrm Stand accepts WIC-VF, WIC and Senior FMNP checks?
Our
farmstand is open Thursday through Sunday, 10am to 7pm every week with assorted produce including romaine lettuce, arugula, basil, spinach, beet greens, parsley, radishes, garlic scapes, eggs, jams, whole roaster chickens, more transplants, consulting services, and tours available all day long!

Eat Healthy Sullivan County Farmer's Market Starts Monday July 6th!
This Market takes place on the lawn outside the Ted Stroebele Building in Monticello and Root 'N Roost Farm will be there every Monday from now until the end of September, 11am-2pm with more of our fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers. WIC-VF, WIC and Senior FMNP checks accepted at this Farmer's Market.

 ...Much more coming this season, including an Earthen Oven design/build class that will lead to Flat Bread Pizza Fridays after Yoga, paired with documentary showings! Root 'N Roost is the place to be!


New Arrivals at our farm: We've got lots of chicks, ducklings, turkey poults, and other baby animals here at the farm. Come down for a
farm tour to see them and all the other wonderful things we have on our farm!
"Bountiful Bags" Now Available
If you're looking for a nice bag of our seasonal veggies at an affordale price, and you can't join our CSA program, then a "Bountiful Bag" is just for you! For $25 you get a big bag of our seasonal produce - assorted greens, herbs, roots, etc... ! Just email or call (845-292-9126) in your order at least 24 hours in advance of pickup (Thursday through Sunday), and throw in some of our other products as well - jams, jellies, eggs, whole chickens, and more!
Whole Roaster Chickens Now Available!

Roaster Chickens

We just processed a round of delicious Cornish Cross roaster chickens and they are available for pickup at our farm for $6 per pound, with bulk discounts available for 10 or more chickens. Our birds free range and get a healthy serving of Green Mountain organic feeds, for a taste that is exactly how chicken should be - healthy, fresh, and toxin free!

Wild Foraging Walk and Talk Coming July 9th!: Learn with Nathaniel Whitmore at Root 'N Roost Farm about local, wild, edible mushrooms, "weeds" and other plants that are literally all around us for most of the year! Potluck dinner follows the walk. Thurs. July 9th from 6pm to 7:30pm, $20 suggested donation. Register here.




Root 'N Roost Farm Jams and JelliesFood Preservation Class: Making Jams and Jellies: Saturday, July 11th, from 5pm to 7pm.
Learn the basics of making jams and jellies from Cheyenne Zigmund and how to safely process the ingredients in a hot water bath canner for long term storage, sale, and/or gifts! $20 suggested. Register Here



Earthen Oven Design/Build: July 25th & 26th, all day - learn the age-old
techniques of using COB (sand, clay, water, and straw), stone, and human ingenuity to create a beautiful and highly functional oven for baking anything you can think of! Lead by Matteo Lundgran of
Cob Therapy. $75 per day / $150 for both Saturday and Sunday. Discounts available for groups of 4 or more people!

We've been running a Wholeshare online bulk buying club for over two years now, and we continue to provide folks with access to a huge array of local, regional, national, and international food items through our Wholeshare online bulk buying program. It's as easy as logging into a website and shopping. Seriously.

Sign up for free and browse the amazing products that Wholeshare has to offer. We order monthly and have the entire shipment delivered to our farm where we sub-divide the ordered products, splitting up large bulk purchases into individual orders so you get to save on buying in bulk with our other Wholeshare group members!

FARM TOURS 
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday between 10am and 5pm!

They are 1 hour long and are $30 minimum for up to 6 adults. Beyond 6 people, adults are $7, Children $5, 3 years old and younger are free!

Come see our pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, bees, gardens, greenhouses, and more! KIDS LOVE IT, and it's a great way to get children excited about nature, farming, and sustainable living! You can also purchase items directly at our farm stand at our farm!

We also offer private tours for you, your business, civic group, etc...
