Happy June TARTans,
By the sights, sounds, and swell of the crowds, we know summer has arrived. This is a season where we all seem to want to cram in as much fun outside and around our area as we possibly can. And there's lots of other folks who come up north with the same idea. All this "outside and active" interest means you're likely to encounter busier trails, sidewalks, and streets and people not familiar with the area. Here at TART we're busy moving forward with improvements and outreach to help everyone have a safe and enjoyable time on the trails. This summer you'll see signage and striping along the trails to help folks better share the space. We're working with the Leelanau County Road Commission on improved signage at road crossings so everyone is more aware. Along the trails you'll see etiquette signs and art pop up to help remind folks to slow down and enjoy the ride. And we encourage everyone to take a deep breath and practice some patience and grace. We have the pleasure and privilege to enjoy this beautiful place all year long. Many of the folks you see might be new to the trail or town. Kindness, courtesy, and caution along the trails go a long way. Demonstrate the best behavior and help folks find their way, offer a smile or a friendly "coming up behind you" as you ding your bell and make your way down the trail. Be extra careful as you ride around town knowing folks may be distracted or lost as they try and make their way around. Most of all, remember that this is a fleeting time and it will be gone too soon. So get out and enjoy the ride and maybe help others to do the same.

NEWS TO KNOW

Three Mile Trail Extension
This past Monday, the East Bay Township Board of Trustees approved issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for engineering and pre-construction services for the Three Mile Trail Extension. With funding secured, TART Trails will work closely with our partners at East Bay Township on selecting a firm to advance the next phase of engineering and the vision of this community. This phase will build on the completed conceptual design and thoughtful community input from 2020-2021. Consultants will work closely with landowners and community partners to design and engineer the estimated 2-mile trail. Project info and RFP here.
Tour de TART
Believe it or not, we are less than one month away from our our biggest fundraising event of the year. We're celebrating nearly twenty years of hosting this fun, family friendly, Friday evening pedal from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. All ages, abilities and styles are welcome to attend - tagalongs, trailers, tandems, recumbents - and everything in between. Food stops, cool down station, luau, dinner, root beer floats, pie, music, and a relaxing bus ride back. It's the perfect family summer event that also benefits the trails. Register or volunteer here.
SPECIAL THANKS

We're so very grateful to everyone who pitched in to make the 2022 Recycle-A-Bicycle Bike Swap a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out to help make this event possible, from the shoppers and sellers to the nearly 50 volunteers. We're thrilled to share that more than $12,000 was raised for the RAB program to continue providing two-wheeled transportation to individuals and families in need.

The 2022 Smart Commute Week marked nearly three decades of celebrating the use of alternative forms of transportation to get around town. This year, our breakfast sponsors and partners served 815 free breakfasts to smart commuters and we had 48 teams, with 400 individuals on those teams competing in the 'Challenge'. We encourage you all to continue to smart commute year round - we're always here to help make your journey a little smoother! Learn more about Smart Commute TC here.

For the fifth consecutive year, our Leelanau Trail Invasive Species Ambassadors have been tackling the removal of the pesky plants that threaten our native inhabitants. Please join us in giving this crew a big thank you when you see them out along the trail.

What a difference a little paint job can make. Many thanks to all of the generous individuals who brought this stenciling project to life that helps users navigate between trails and makes motorists aware they need to share the road. Shout out to The Filling Station for their continued support and use of their private drive; Mike Greilick for donating equipment, sharrow stencils, cones, expertise, and time; Jacklin Steel for donating the TART and Boardman Lake Trail stencils; and Maureen Botteron for showing up and helping out!

TART TRIVIA

Do you know what it takes to be a good trail steward?
It's not signing up for an event, or attending volunteer training, or wearing a vest (although we do love all of those things). It's leading by example. It's knowing proper trail etiquette and practicing it. It's being kind to others. If everyone follows the three C's - courtesy, caution, control - then we all do our part to make the trails safe, accessible, and welcoming for all.
