Greetings TARTans,
This past Saturday Brick Wheels hosted a retirement celebration for one of TART Trails' founders, Tim Brick. On a beautiful Saturday, folks coming off the trails or with plans for a Saturday afternoon bike or ski, stopped by to wish Tim well. It felt like the entire town showed up, eager to share a hug and their favorite Brick story. Tim was a founding member of Citizens for a Better Way, the all volunteer group that spearheaded the development of the Traverse Area Recreational Trail (TART) connecting downtown Traverse City to Acme.  As a founding Board member of TART Trails, Tim's fingerprints are all over the trail network and the outdoor culture and active lifestyle that's come to define our region. Tim represents the passion and spirit of so many of our founders - they took challenges head on and found innovative solutions to problems that came their way. The trails we all enjoy today are a direct result of their can-do attitude and life long commitment to supporting the community they live in and love. Our founders continue to inspire us today - to dream big, figure out a way to get the work done, and serve the community to the best of our abilities. We're excited for Andy Weir and all the Brickheads and we're grateful for Tim's 48 years of transformational leadership. And, Tim, we know you're "retired" but we've got a few more ribbons to cut this summer, so keep those scissors sharp.

Julie Clark, Chief Executive Officer

RAB Annual Report
We are pleased to share Recycle-A-Bicycle's recent Annual Report. The beloved RAB program provides recycled and refurbished bicycles to economically disadvantaged individuals in the Grand Traverse region. Read up on what Program Director Don Cunkle and his team of dedicated volunteers accomplished for the community in the past year here. And be sure to save-the-date for the always anticipated annual RAB Bike Swap - Saturday, June 4!

It was another snow and sunshine filled afternoon at last Saturday's Vasa Open House. Thanks again to our very talented cookie baker crew and to our resident Open House Ambassador Marty Klein for helping our ski community refuel after good times on the trail. Save the date for the last open house of the season - Saturday, March 12 - weather permitting (think snow!)

TART Trails staff got out for an afternoon field trip to fatbike and ski the Leelanau Trail earlier this week. Many thanks to the all volunteer LT grooming crew for all their hard work and dedication this winter, Pete O. for joining us, Nick Wierzba and Suttons Bay Bikes for hooking up the gear, and Hop Lot for an after work out reward.

Many thanks to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians for awarding a grant to Acme Township for the Acme Connector Trail. This exciting and critical 1.8 mile connector is the southernmost segment of the Nakwema Trailway.

Many thanks to our friends at Silver Spruce Brewing for their partnership and support over the years! This big hearted and bike friendly business on Eighth Street contributes to making the corridor the improved and inviting space it's become for locals and visitors alike. We caught up with co-owner Leah Tyrell earlier this week and she shared, “We love TART Trails for making our town so accessible and active. It’s such a fun way to discover new spots while enjoying the beautiful landscape along the way.”

Grooming Appreciation Party - Thursday, March 17

The man, the myth, the legend - Mr. Tim Brick. By now, the word is out that Tim is celebrating retirement from a 48 year career as owner of Brick Wheels in Traverse City. But did you know that in addition to years of supplying locals and visitors alike the gear to get around on wheels and skis, he was also a founding member of TART Trails and is credited as the original TARTan to propose a capital campaign to create a trail around Boardman Lake and connect the regional trails? We can't wait to celebrate his long lived vision come to life this summer!
