Alan Chan: Email de Mayo!
The Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra presented two concerts in L.A. this past February and March with great enthusiasm, and I can't wait to share some recent news of my musical journey with you.
The ACJO Recording Project
was kick-started in mid-April with our first ever recording session at the Bridge Recording Studio in Glendale! With a team of 30 music professionals, we recorded 9 original compositions of mine, written in the past 10 years - nearly 60 minutes of music in 2 days!
Completing this first phase of the project was only possible thanks to a generous start-up gift from a Hong Kong patron. For the post-production phase we will roll out a program which will offer participants an opportunity to have a personal experience of the creative process of this album, while helping us to bring the project to the finish line. More updates to come, and you are welcome to reach me anytime for more details! Would you like to join us?

Rancho Calaveras, A Documentary was made thanks to the support of the New Music USA's MetLife Creative Connections grant. A collaboration with director Becca Louisell, this film explores the garden that inspired me to compose Rancho Calaveras for jazz orchestra. First screened on 3/3 at the ACJO concert, it is now available on YouTube!

Medfield HS Jazz Ensemble in China was a success! On April 21, I joined them at the JZ Club in Shanghai for the last concert of their China tour. Winner of the 2011 Charles Mingus Award, the band played my compositions Moving to a New Capital and A Spirit's Dream. It was an inspiring experience to work with so many talented young musicians, and kudos to Medfield's music director Doug Olsen for his leadership!
NEXT: A brand new orchestral piece is cooking and will be played by the La Jolla Symphony (Steven Schick, director) as a part of American Composers Orchestra's JCOI reading in September.
This summer I will join forces with iPalpiti Artists International to put together their 16th Annual Festival in Los Angeles. Emerging artists from 20 countries are convening in Los Angeles in July with more than 15 events scheduled!
Thank you again for your support!
All the best,
