Kansas Prescribed Fire Council:
Westward Ho!

  • Partnerships support existing good work of eastern Kansas fire culture while fostering prescribed fire culture in western Kansas.
  • The Nature Conservancy, Pheasants Forever, and the Kansas Forest Service are adding staff or contributing support to help prescribed fire become a vital part of western Kansas land management.
  • Partners will coordinate prescribed fire activities on private lands through prescribed burn associations.

Niobrara Valley
Prescribed Fire Association:
Helping landowners in six counties

Ranchers became increasingly concerned as they helplessly watched their grass disappear under the trees and had to reduce herd sizes or find alternative pastures to compensate for the loss. Mechanical and chemical treatments are expensive and labor intensive. Prescribed fire has proven effective for controlling cedar, but a strong cultural bias against prescribed fire delayed the use of fire as a range management tool.
Then the Niobrara Valley Prescribed Fire Council was born.
