Fire and People - Part 3

understanding how people view fire....

This article is part of a series highlighting results from a recent report.  This report took a national look at how people view fire.  Some of the conclusions are counter to conventional wisdom in the field.

McCaffery and Colleagues asked participants what they understood the message of Smokey the Bear to be telling them.  Survey participants responded that Smokey's message is to be careful with fire, not that fire itself is bad.  As a whole, participants understood that fire is an important process.  Often times, firefighters blame Smokey for non-acceptance of fire, but there are other underlying causes when people do not support the use of fire.  Read the report to learn more about this surprising result.
