Have you checked out our podcast series, Audio Interference?

“I think about posters as a way of starting a conversation, but I don’t feel like we talk enough about how that conversation is started and where that conversation goes beyond talking.” — Kameelah Janan Rasheed

On Nov 4, 2015, Interference Archive hosted a panel entitled "Solidarity, Distribution, Design: The Poster Today," which explored the intersection of graphic design and socio-political engagement. Josh MacPhee of Interference Archive moderated the event and was joined by artists Dread Scott, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Avram Finkelstein for a rousing discussion that touched on topics of appropriation, respectability politics, and even the Fast and Furious movie franchise.

Staffing the Evening Shift

For those of you who don’t get to visit Interference Archive regularly, we want to share thoughts and idas from our volunteers. Below is an excerpt of a longer piece posted on our blog by volunteer Michele Hardesty

"After several years of coming to Interference Archive events, and even doing a bit of work in the collections, I became a sustaining contributor last fall, and then I began staffing the Thursday evening shift. Evenings are often busy with meetings, events, and installations, but Thursday is the only evening when there are open hours at IA. These are just what they sound like: times the archive and its exhibitions are staffed by volunteers and open to visitors.

Early this year, I started hosting “cataloging parties” on Thursday nights, with the help of fellow volunteers Jen Hoyer and Drew Gordon. What “cataloging” means in this case is making digital records of our holdings for the online catalog that launched this past year. Right now the online catalog represents only a fraction of our collection. However, as we populate it, the catalog will make it easier for researchers to find things in the collection, and it will make our holdings accessible beyond the physical space of the archive. At the same time, opening the process of cataloging to all volunteers is another way in which we practice community archiving."

If you’re interested in volunteering at Interference Archive, check out our website for info on how to get involved, or email info@interferencearchive.org. You can also support the amazing work of all our volunteers by making a financial donation.

Come Join us on June 2nd for a Cataloging Party!

IA is now hosting bi-weekly cataloging parties! A bunch of us get together with laptops every other Thursday evening and work on entering some of our amazing posters, pamphlets, buttons, and record albums into our catalog so that they can be searchable online. The next cataloging party is Thursday, June 2nd, 6–9pm. BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop)!!!

Wanna Help Us Staff Interference Archive?

Interference Archive's open hours are run entirely by volunteers. We need your help keeping the doors open, organizing the collection, and orienting visitors. On Saturday, June 4th from 3:30-5pm we'll be holding a training for people that want to help staff. Please RSVP to info@interferencearchive.org.
Massive donation of Inkworks Press!

We are extremely excited that Lincoln Cushing and the former Inkworks Press Collective chose Interference Archive as one of the sites to house an almost complete collection of their poster output, literally thousands of posters printed by the worker-owned and run print shop from 1974 to 2016. Although we are extremely saddened that this radical Bay Area movement institution had to close its doors this year, we are proud that anyone interested in researching the press or any of the hundreds of political issues it printed posters about can come find them at Interference. In addition, our Cataloging/Taxonomy Working Group is working on a system for directly importing existing metadata about the posters into our catalog, so that it will be possible for anyone to search the collection from our online catalog!
