Constellations, Cognitive Maps, and Data Visualization
Mapping the Vocabulary of Struggle

A Dialogue with the editors of Keywords for Radicals

Tuesday May 24, 7 pm

Along with its 50+ entries exploring the keywords used by contemporary activists, Keywords for Radicals (AK Press 2016) incorporates data visualization to show how the “vocabulary” shared by radicals constitutes a kind of self-supporting small world network.

Such visualization helps to map how a vocabulary works and how struggles over word usage and meaning might most effectively be carried out. But while data visualization of this kind can be useful, it also raises significant questions about the relationship between representation and what’s real.

Join us to discuss the theoretical and aesthetic foundations of their data visualization project and to evaluate the promise and perils of this practice in the age of the infographic.

It's Time for Spring Cleaning!

Saturday May 21, 11am–5pm // Sunday May 22, 12–5pm

Help us get the Archive back in shape to take on another amazing year of events, exhibitions, and acquisitions!

• We need to clear shelf space for some amazing new collections that have been donated.
• We need help filing a backlog of other recent acquisitions.
• Interference needs a good sweep, mop, and vacuum.
• We're moving all our fabric materials (T-shirts, banners, patches, etc.) into plastic tubs.
• And so much more!

Tonight's Cataloging Party Postponed—Come Join us June 2nd!

IA is now hosting bi-weekly cataloging parties! A bunch of us get together with laptops every other Thursday evening and work on entering some of our amazing posters, pamphlets, buttons, and record albums into our catalog so that they can be searchable online. The next cataloging party is Thursday, June 2nd, 6–9pm. BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop)!!!
Interference Archive has a desk for rent!

In order to help afford our space, we rent out a small number of desks to like-minded individuals and organizations, and we currently have one available. Your desk would be located in a shared work space, and costs $360/month, including all utilities. You would have 24 hour access, and get to work close to a really nice crew of people. If you're interested, contact info@interferencearchive.org.
Audio Interference 14: Freedom Archives

“We’re blessed with being the keepers of some very valuable stuff. It’s not ours. It’s intentional that this is part of the community and belongs to the community.” —Claude Marks

Freedom Archives is based in San Francisco and contains over 10,000 hours of audio and video tape, which chronicles both revolutionary struggles and state repressions. They also create audio and video documentaries of their own. Interference Archive reached out to Freedom Archives because of their shared commitment to preserving and activating the histories of social movements. Lani Hanna spoke to Freedom Archives co-founder Claude Marks, and his co-worker Nathaniel Moore for our 14th Audio Interference podcast.
