The Joanie4Jackie Chainletter

November 4 and 5

Interference Archive is presenting a special series of events revisiting the innovative video chainletter project Joanie4Jackie. Conceived by Miranda July, Joanie4Jackie was an alternative distribution system for women moviemakers. Every woman who sent her short film or video to Joanie 4 Jackie received a Chainletter tape in the mail.

“You always suspected it and now you know it’s true: Girls and women are making movies everyday” – Joanie4Jackie

Organized by Mark Lukenbill, Paris McGarry, Mary Billyou, and Chris Bravo

November 4th, 7pm: A roundtable discussion with Joanie4Jackie filmmakers, archivists and organizers. To be preceded by a special screening of Pure & Magical Pussy Power, a J4J documentary, with director Vanessa Haroutunian in person. This is a special opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the people who contributed, supported, and built the J4J project. Let’s talk about supporting culture produced by women!

November 5th, 7pm: J4J Remix Chainletter
A special opportunity to experience a Chainletter as it was originally viewed! A carefully selected group of videos, all appeared in original Chainletters, will be presented together, with authentic intros. Filmmakers in person!

Ongoing: For a limited time the J4J Chainletters will available at a special viewing station in the Interference Archive. This is a special opportunity for people to explore all 19 Chainletters, check out a curated selection of original VHS tapes, and view visual and textual material related to the project.

Audio Interference Season 2: UnLocal

“It was extremely traumatic…mothers didn’t send their kids to school, people didn’t go to work, because of these raids.” – Tania Mattos

UnLocal is a New York-based legal services organization, which works with immigrant communities to provide legal representation, education, and advocacy. UnLocal’s collaboration with Mobile Print Power was included in the recent Interference Archive exhibition, Soñamos Sentirnos Libres: Under Construction.  In this episode, Brooke Shuman talks to Michele Lampach, Executive Director of UnLocal, and Tania Mattos, the Outreach Coordinator.

Audio Interference is now available on iTunes and Stitcher, so it's super easy to subscribe to our feed on your phone or tablet!

Indigenous People’s Justice Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon
Sunday, November 13, 2-6pm

In honor of Indigenous People’s Day and Anti-Thanksgiving, we are holding a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on the theme of Indigenous peoples’ movement histories. Across settler-colonial geographies, Indigenous peoples’ histories have largely been misrepresented. This misrepresentation has enabled and concealed acts of violence against Indigenous peoples in many forms – from environmental contamination to forced relocation. In an effort to learn from and support the myriad movements that have arisen in response to this violence, we will glean relevant information from the Interference Archive to share through Wikipedia. Our objective is to make information and documentation related to Indigenous peoples’ movement histories more accessible for current and future movement makers, educators, and learners.

No experience editing Wikipedia is required but please bring a laptop! Experienced Wikipedians will be around to help out, and we’ll be starting the edit-a-thon with a brief tutorial to cover the basics. For more details, check out our Wikipedia meetup page here and Facebook event here.  Questions? Send us an email at info@interferencearchive.org.

Save the Date! Friday, November 18th our big Fall Fundraiser!
