#HNBAFamilia  #HNBAPresente

Querida HNBA Familia,

I promised in the last edition of E-Noticias that despite our already record-breaking year and only 89 days until Annual Convention, “WE ARE NOT DONE.” As you read through this edition of E-Noticias, you’ll see why I felt confident in making this promise-- the amount that our HNBA leadership and members have accomplished in the past month is impressive!

In addition to numerous member events hosted by our Regions & Affiliates, some of which are highlighted below, I am so proud of all the ways in which the HNBA rallied to provide critical pro bono and other volunteer help, as well as advocacy and civic engagement related to the Family Separation immigration crisis. That fight is certainly not over, and I hope that you will visit our “How You Can Help” #KeepFamiliesTogether page on our website (and linked in the sidebar) to find ways to be a part of the solution for the thousands of families impacted by this crisis.  Our “How You Can Help” Disaster Relief page is also still actively updated and provides many opportunities to help to our brothers and sisters who are still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and other natural disasters around the country last year, including a Puerto Rico pro bono event we are co-hosting with the ACC Foundation at the National Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans at the end of this week!

As always, this edition of E-Noticias is filled with information about future events, opportunities to contribute to the furtherance of our mission, and exciting new and existing member benefits.  I encourage you to take the time to read through it and, of course, click on the link below to register for our upcoming Annual Convention and its many specialty programs!  Please take time to read the article showcasing the important work we’ve done this year leading or contributing to amicus briefs filed in high profile cases litigated at every level of our federal courts. Like many who serve on the HNBA’s numerous substantive law committees, Peter Karanjia and the entire Amicus Committee are unsung heroes of this organization, ensuring that the HNBA’s voice remains active and relevant as our courts decide cases affecting our members and mission.

Also linked below is one of my favorite civic engagement projects this year, a video of past and present HNBA Leaders reciting the Declaration of Independence released as part of the HNBA’s commemoration of Independence Day. Many affiliates followed suit by recording videos with their own leaders and I must shout out Corporate Counsel Division Vice-Chair Juan Sempertegui and The Raben Group for spearheading this great project!

In addition to volunteer work and advocacy, we also issued several press releases, linked below, on a number of recent Court Decisions impacting the Latino community, the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Kennedy, and the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to our Highest Court.

As I sign off from my penultimate E-Noticias letter, I want to reiterate how grateful I am to each of you for making this an unforgettable and unbelieveably productive year. It has truly been an honor to serve as your National President. Now let’s make these last 7 weeks count!!!

Con mucho cariño y respeto,

Erica V. Mason
HNBA National President

Latest Press Releases

HNBA Amicus Committee

The Amicus Committee has continued its efforts to ensure that the HNBA maintains an active role in important cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts that affect our members.  We are currently spearheading an effort to participate as amicus curiae in one or more of the recent cases challenging the Trump Administration’s family separation policy, and have received expressions of interest from several other bar and civil rights organizations who will likely join our amicus brief.  In addition, within the last year, the Amicus Committee has ensured that the HNBA has been able to participate as a friend of the court in several major cases, including: (a) challenges to the Administration’s efforts to terminate the DACA program; (b) challenges to the Administration’s “travel ban” (including amicus briefing in the Supreme Court); and (c) a major en banc decision by the Second Circuit, Zarda v. Altitude Express, which upheld the right of LGBT individuals to rely on the anti-discrimination protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  In this time of grave threats to the Rule of Law, the Amicus Committee is committed to ensuring that the Association’s voice is heard by the courts.

Thank You

The HNBA would like to extend a special thank you to Peter Karanjia, Chair of the HNBA Amicus Brief Committee, for all the work the Committee is doing. Peter is also co-chair of Davis Wright Tremaine’s appellate practice group and a member of the firm's communications, media, IP & technology group and its privacy & security group. eter has extensive experience in appellate and regulatory litigation (having litigated over 100 appeals), government investigations, and complex civil litigation.

HBA-DC President Issued Statements Against Congressman’s Comments and Threats: “Asylum Seekers Have the Legal Right to an Attorney”

On May 17, Richard Rodriguez, President of the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC), released the following statement in response to Congressman Paul Gosar’s (R-AZ-04) call to disbar all attorneys assisting migrant clients with asylum claims.

“Refugees seeking asylum have the unequivocal right to be represented by an attorney under U.S. law, pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act,” said HBA-DC President Rodriguez. “Refugees seeking asylum are fleeing from rampant violence, including high murder rates in their native countries, and arriving in this country to seek refuge. The legal process for filing asylum claims is complex and overwhelming, but a person’s chances of winning a claim is far greater with legal assistance. Congressman Gosar’s comments and threats are offensive, dangerous, and betray a misunderstanding of American law. Attorneys providing services to the most vulnerable among us should be lauded, not threatened, as they are ensuring that refugees get the due process that is the promise of the United States."

HNBA Members Recite the Declaration of Independence

Every Fourth of July, Americans across the nation celebrate the founding of our country.   In 1776, representatives of the thirteen British colonies in North America grew tired of abuses by the British Monarch and asserted their independence as a free nation.  In so doing, the Continental Congress declared that our new country would be founded upon certain values outlined in the Declaration of Independence including equality, liberty and the right to due process.

Although the Declaration of Independence was drafted and adopted more than 200 years ago, the stated principles continue to guide our country’s path.  As Americans and as members of the HNBA, we are honored to recite the Declaration of Independence on this celebration of our independence.

Event Recap

Sixteen members of Poder25’s “GC Ready” Class and 26 members of Poder25’s “GC Nexter” class traveled from around the country to attend our first Poder25 Regional Event at Baker McKenzie’s Chicago offices.

The event kicked off with a “fireside chat” with General Counsel from Conagra Brands (Colleen Batcheler), ULTA Beauty (Jodi Caro), Univar (Jeff Carr), and Baker McKenzie’s Gloria Santona (former McDonald's General Counsel; AON Plc Board Director), moderated by HNBA General Counsel Luis Avila.  The panelists shared their stories about their paths to their first General Counsel seats as well as the risks they have taken to get to their current positions.

The group also heard a presentation from Korn Ferry’s Andres Tapia, co-author of "Autentico: The Definitive Guide to Latino Career Success," on leveraging authentic Latino leadership to make it to the C-Suite. Andres also led a robust group discussion about the different types of Latino identities discussed in the book and how we can each lead more authentically.

GC Ready class members also received one-on-one coaching sessions with our Executive Search Firm and General Counsel Faculty, and GC Nexters received one-on-one mentoring sessions led by the GC Ready class.  The event was capped off with a networking reception followed by a lively dinner during which our Poder25ers discussed their takeaways from the presentations and mentoring sessions.

Mil gracias to Gloria Santona, Regine Corrado, and Alexis Robertson of Baker McKenzie for hosting the program and reception and purchasing copies of "Autentico" for all of the event attendees, and to GC and Executive Search faculty members Jodi Caro, Colleen Batcheler, Jeff Carr, Andres Tapia, and Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Barrett Avigdor and Sonya Som (matchless Poder25 Steering Committee member!).

Natalie Pierce Quoted in Law 360 Article: “In their own words:  Minority Partners on Reaching the Top”
Congratulations to HNBA Member and past HNBA Regional XVII President, Natalie Pierce, for being quoted in this Law 360 Article: "In their own words: Minority Partners on Reaching the Top." Despite decades of industry wide initiatives, movement up the partnership ladder has stagnated for minority attorneys. Attorneys of color make up 8 percent of law firm equity partners, according to Law360 data — a number that has barely budged in recent years. Click HERE to read the full article.
