Recorded Call-In Regarding Deportation

On Thursday, December 1, the LGBT Bar hosted a call-in, co-sponsored by HNBA and NAPABA, addressing the increased risk of deportation as a result of the change in administration.  The most vulnerable among us are the most frequent targets of attacks, especially following the nationalistic and hateful rhetoric of this campaign season. The United States currently hosts more than eleven million undocumented workers, who provide an irreplaceable work force.

Let’s stop agonizing and start organizing; make an immediate difference in the lives of detainees today. The LGBT Bar is searching for volunteers, both Spanish speaking and non-Spanish speaking, willing to provide assistance to women and children fleeing from persecution that are now being detained at the family detention center in Dilley, TX.

Hear from expert speakers including Scott Titshaw, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Associate Professor, Mercer University School of Law; Elaine Cintron, Associate Attorney, Lichter Immigration; and Noemi Masliah, Partner, The Masliah Firm.

The HNBA Board of Governors held a very productive meeting in Austin, TX from December 1st-3rd.  A highlight was the guest speaker-Justice Eva Guzman, from the Texas Supreme Court.  We also wanted to give a big THANK YOU to Judge Celeste Villarreal for her hospitality and to McGinnis Lochridge for their generosity in hosting the board meeting.

You are cordially invited to contribute an article for the Spring 2017 Edition of Noticias.
The theme for the 2017 CCC is "Gateway To Your Global Network," and the Spring Edition of Noticias will highlight the international practice and aspects of the practice of law. Cross-border law practice is growing to serve the increasingly global business of its client.  Expansion takes several forms, including the physical – law firms opening offices in other countries to serve new and existing clients as well as the virtual expansion that supports the economics of cross boarder activity by enabling the practice of law apart from a physical presence.  Issues we face include barriers to practicing abroad, ethical considerations, and many others. We hope that the articles submitted for consideration will help our members identify and strengthen global network.

The Formation of the HNBA

Like most noteworthy organizations and group efforts, the Hispanic National Bar Association was founded in times of adversity. It was a conscientious response to the increasing struggles and questionable burdens facing the Hispanic community in the United States. The year was 1971, and the landmark decision, Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), was still leading civil rights litigation across the United States. (…)
