Torres-Díaz, commenced 2017 by uniting and meeting with bar and diversity leaders across the continental U.S. throughout January and February, celebrating those who have shown a commitment to advancing our shared missions and collaborating on how best to traverse this uncertain political landscape.

Mason, spent two productive days in Washington DC, building bridges and advancing the mission of the Hispanic National Bar Association. President Torres-Díaz saying, "we had the pleasure of connecting with the offices of Senators and Representatives from across the nation, and hearing from inspiring Latino leaders like Jorge Elorza, Lionel Sosa, and Catherine Cortez Masto, the first Latina to be elected to the United States Senate. Resolution 110B concerning proposed amendments to Standard 316 was defeated by the ABA House of Delegates. A significant number of people were in the well of the House prepared to speak both for and against 110B. There were six salmon slips filed in support of this resolution. In contrast, there were 27 salmon slips filed in opposition. Several, but not all, were called to speak before the question was called. Judge Peter Reyes (on behalf of the HNBA) and Wendy Shiba (former President of NAPABA) were high enough in the batting order arranged by the opposition that they were called to speak. Judge Peter Reyes ended up being the last speaker in opposition of the resolution. Representatives from the NBA and NNABA had also filed salmon slips but weren't recognized before the question was called; the Chair did, however, read the names of everyone who was prepared to speak in opposition.
Judge Peter Reyes said, "While we have won this battle, we will need to remain vigilant. As the saying goes, 'Justice never sleeps!'"

Maryland Hispanic Bar Association
The Maryland Hispanic Bar Association's largest event is our Annual Gala, which recently celebrated its 23rd year on October 16, 2016. Our gala is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize attorneys and Judges who make positive contributions to our community. The gala provides time to network while enjoying great music, dancing, and delicious food, so please save the date for our 24th Annual Gala held at Martin’s Crosswind’s on September 28, 2017. Other prior events this year have included a mentoring event with the local law schools and our annual holiday party.
MHBA is currently working on a Spanish speaking attorney directory. The directory includes information about an attorney's practice area for lawyer referrals and as a resource for our members seeking assistance from other members in specific areas of the law. Over the next few months our organization will host networking and public service events.
On March 15th, 2017, MHBA will be hosting a legislative day allowing our members an opportunity to address our concerns before the Maryland Legislature.
To stay current on MHBA events please visit our website or contact our president, Jessica Quincosa at firstname.lastname@example.org
