2018 MHBA's 13th Annual Gala
HNBA President Erica V. Mason and HNBA Finance Director Byran Browning were among the HNBA members that attended the 2018 MHBA Gala. The Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association's Thirteenth Annual MHBA Gala honored Tamara Cabán-Ramirez and Senator Melisa Lopez Franzen, recipients of the 2018 Manuel Guerrero Courage In Leadership Award and featured Keynote Speaker, Kim Rivera, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary of HP Inc. HNBA Latina Commission's Pearls of Wisdom
In March, members of HNBA's Latina Commission took a break from the Corporate Counsel Conference to share Pearls of Wisdom with students at Mission College in San Francisco. Pearls of Wisdom is a pipeline program directed at exposing young women in the community to the legal profession by giving them access to Latina Leaders. The students were able to hear the personal stories of each member and learn about their pathway to success. This year, HNBA’s Latina Commission will celebrate its 10th anniversary!
2018 Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA)

The Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA) is an annual leadership academy for diverse bar leaders from each of the CBLA member organizations: the ABA, HNBA, NAPABA, NBA, LGBT Bar, and NNABA. Through this collaboration, the CBLA aims to strengthen the pipeline of diverse bar association leaders through leadership training and professional development programs. The CBLA benefits current and future bar leaders, the bar association community, and the legal profession overall, and lays the foundation for further collaborative efforts by the sponsoring bar associations to foster diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.
CBLA is intended for:
• Up-and-coming bar leaders who have been in practice for 5-15 years.
• Have served in a leadership role with an HNBA Affiliate or local minority bar association, or who have served as an HNBA Regional President, Deputy Regional President, or chair or co-chair of an HNBA committee, section, division, or task force.

Inaugural HNBA LGBT Division Public Interest Scholarship
In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the HNBA’s LGBT Section, the HNBA LGBT Division announced the launch of the LGBT Division Public Interest Scholarship Program at the 2018 Corporate Counsel Conference in San Francisco, CA.
Deadline to Apply: May 15th by 5:00 PM EST
To be eligible, the applicant must:
(i) be either a first, second or third year law student in good standing in an ABA accredited law school, or a recent law graduate (having received the degree within 12 months of the application date);
(ii) have secured an internship or placement for Summer 2018 (which can extend beyond the Summer) or the fall of 2018 (for a recent law graduate) with a public interest organization engaged in legal, advocacy, or policy work with a direct impact on Latinx LGBTQ individuals.

Congratulations Arnulfo D. Hernandez!
Arnulfo D. Hernandez, Managing Partner of Hernandez & Associates, P.C. and Region XIII President of the HNBA, was named to Law Week Colorado’s 2018 Top Litigators. Arnulfo D. Hernández is a leader in the Colorado legal community. He was named President of Region XIII of the Hispanic National Bar Association in 2017 covering Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. He served as President of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association in 2016. For the past two years, he served as the Chair of the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Immigration Law Section. He stays active in volunteer activities sponsored locally by the Colorado Lawyers Committee and Metro Volunteer Lawyers.
HNBA Member Melissa Gomez Nelson Makes Partner!
At the end of March, Dentons announced the promotion of 36 new partners from the Australia, Canada, Europe, Latin America and Caribbean, Singapore, UK and Middle East and United States regions of the Firm. The new partners represent a range of practices, sectors and industries.

She focuses on representing clients in white collar criminal matters and government investigations, with an emphasis on anti-money laundering, cryptocurrency & block chain and fraud criminal matters. Melissa has extensive experience conducting internal investigations, and defending clients in criminal matters from initial grand jury investigations, through sentencing hearings. She has experience representing public and private entities as well as corporate witnesses and individuals in both federal and state criminal matters.
