A MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT
Dear HNBA members and supporters:
As we near the closing of another year, we truly appreciate the commitment of our partners and members who have helped the HNBA exceed its goals and expand services to the Hispanic community. Your continued financial support and volunteer leadership have allowed the HNBA to provide our members with key leadership and development programs and opportunities. The HNBA could not have been successful without your support, commitment and engagement. We are excited about the new programs that we are unveiling this year, our new partnerships, and the continuation of our existing programs and partnerships. Thank you all!
On behalf of the HNBA Board of Governors and staff, I want to thank you for continuing to partner with the HNBA in our mission to advance and diversify the legal profession, judiciary, and legislature; provide professional and business development and networking opportunities to our members; strengthen the educational pipeline; empower the Latino community through legal, financial, and educational literacy initiatives; and advocate for solutions on issues that affect the Latino community. We have accomplished much, and our voice is loud and influential.
2106 promises to be an exciting year for the HNBA. I want to wish you all an abundance of happiness and peace this holiday season.
Robert T. Maldonado

Region XV and the NMHBA were proud to have support from the New Mexico legal community as well as from so many prominent Hispanic lawyers. Region XIX (PR)
Region XIX created three new law school groups in the following universities: Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and the University of Puerto Rico. We received the support of the Deans of the three law schools and they allowed us to be part of the university’s student organizations. During the visits to the law schools, we realized that the HNBA was unknown amongst the students. Nonetheless, we have a substantial number of students that became part of the organization as a result of these efforts. Knowing that, we wanted to host an initiation ceremony to formalize the student organizations and to develop the engagement necessary to work for the organization.
On November 5th, we hosted an initiation ceremony for over 50 new law student members. The ceremony was held at the United States District Court, District of Puerto Rico, presided by the Chief Judge, Honorable Aida Delgado Colón. HNBA President-Elect, Pedro J. Torres-Díaz, participated in the event and addressed the law students. During the event we experienced the commitment and enthusiasm of the students to work with, and for, the HNBA. This was a great accomplishment for the HNBA in Puerto Rico and it will have a positive impact for the organization.
Hispanic Bar Association of Greater Kansas City
On November 5th the Hispanic Bar Association of Greater Kansas City (HBAGKC) held its scholarship reception at the offices of Polsinelli with Ramona Romero, General Counsel at Princeton University, as keynote speaker.

HBA-DC Advocates for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
On December 14, 2015, the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) sent a letter to Congress supporting legislation that helps achieve comprehensive immigration reform, such as S. 744, passed by the U.S. Senate during the 113th Congress (2013-2014). NMHBA 15th Annual Holiday Fundraiser SOLD OUT
This year’s event sold out the 300 raffle tickets and many simply donated to the event without expectation for an entry into the reverse raffle. The generosity of our legal and greater community was overwhelming and humbling. The event was the biggest fundraiser for the NMHBA's educational initiatives, including scholarships, high school outreach, mentorship and the Summer Law Camp for middle school students. Almost thirty law firms, business and State Bar Sections sponsored this year’s event. Numerous local and statewide businesses donated generous goods and services to the Silent Auction. The event was also attended by a who’s who of the New Mexico legal community, including many members of the judiciary, legislature, dignitaries and various candidates for office. The net proceeds from sponsorships, ticket sales and silent auction bids are allocated to the NMHBA and NMHBA Foundation to ensure the continued sustainability of these great programs. Thank you to everyone who joined to set record support and attendance at this year's event!

The NMHBA and the Mexican American Law Student Association (MALSA) kicked off yet another year of mentoring activities. For years, the NMHBA has teamed up with MALSA, its sister organization, to pair law students with NMHBA member attorneys. Attorney mentors assist their law student mentees by providing career advice and any other support a student may need. The NMHBA and MALSA usually sponsor two joint events during the school year that are attended by all of the mentors and mentees. This year the NMHBA mentoring programs will also focus on increasing bar exam passage rates for students of color. Discussions are already underway to implement the “Red Robin” and “Match Reveal” selection process based on the Hispanic National Bar Association mentoring program for next year.
A very impressive group of NMHBA member attorneys and MALSA law students attended the kickoff event on Monday, November 16, 2015. In attendance were a U.S. Trustee, State Senator, Judge, and a 40 under 40 recipient. The next event is scheduled for early spring.
NMHBA/UNM Law Alumni Host Las Cruces Reception for Dean Pareja
- Connecting with NMHBA Member Attorneys and friends around the state is a priority for the NMHBA and the UNM School of Law deans. Dean Sergio Pareja visited with law school alumni and NMHBA members in Las Cruces at a reception on Thursday, October 29, 2015.
- Approximately 60 law alumni and NMHBA members joined Pareja at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces to connect and network as well as to meet him.
- The Law School co-hosted the event with the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association. A one-hour CLE was offered by the NMHBA prior to the reception, and attendees learned about "Cross-Border Legal Issues: Family Law, Agricultural Guest Worker Program, Plea Agreements and Immigration Consequences."
- Afterwards the group gathered in the hotel’s Azul Ultralounge to learn about what is happening at the law school, how the co-deanship is working, and to chat and have fun.
- The successful event is just one of many the NMHBA is planning as part of Statewide Outreach.
