Meet the Shuri Network in Leeds on April 21


We're really excited to announce our Diversity in Digital Health event, hosted by NHS England, the Shuri Network and the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN, at Cloth Hall Court in Leeds.

As Sir Simon Stevens announces a new commitment to ensure that the health service’s ‘head office’ is representative of the wider workforce at all levels of seniority, we will examine the challenges that exist in making this happen.

We'll be exploring the following key themes and focusing on practical ways to improve diversity:
  • The Shuri Network: The community for BAME women and allies, building inclusive leadership in digital health, launching across the North
  • BAME Innovators and Entrepreneurs: The role and the challenges for health tech entrepreneurs
  • NHS England People Plan: Delivering heritage, culture, potential and talents of all its workforce/wider community to the NHS
  • Carer Community: Innovations to support family and community care

Diversity and Inclusion at the Rewired Leadership Summit

The Shuri Network was delighted to be involved in the Digital Health Rewired Leadership Summit on March 3, where diversity and inclusion dominated the agenda. 

TechUK president, Jacqueline de Rojas, provided a keynote which highlighted the importance of fostering diversity in healthcare to ensure technology caters to the needs of the NHS and the people it serves.

The Shuri Network also sent a clear message that improving diversity and inclusivity in the NHS is something everyone owns and “cannot be outsourced to HR”, in their afternoon panel session.

Providing an update on the Network’s activity since it’s launch at Digital Health Summer Schools in July 2019, one of our co-founders, Dr Shera Chok, said the organisation has has grown to around 500 members and allies, raised the importance of diversity and the connection to quality and patient safety, advised NHSX and NHSE, held our inaugural event at Barts Health, produced podcasts and webinars and spoken at schools and national events.

Sonia Patel, who has been appointed as CIO for NHSX said, " We want genuine diversity including cognitive diversity to get better outcomes for NHS.”

The 2020 HEAT (Healthcare, Education and Training) Awards celebrate education, training, leadership and workforce development at all levels and across all professions - those who have gone above and beyond their role to make a difference, support and motivate their peers, championed quality improvement and ultimately improved people’s health and safety.

At the Shuri Network, we have actively promoted and celebrated equality and diversity, highlighed role models and demonstrated inclusive leadership as well as challenged the system to do better. We have stimulated change by highlighting the need for the NHS to build a workforce that is digitally confident, engaged with digital transformation and whose voices and ideas are heard. By doing this we are helping to transform the workforce in order to provide more coordinated and proactive care for our patients.
