The Dutch ABC
It's time for the fifth part!

Tompouce! The tompouce - or sometimes written as tompoes - is a typical Dutch pastry and it's iconic; the market allows little variation in form, size and colour. It must be rectangular, with two layers of puff pastry. The icing is smooth and pink, or occasionally white. For many years however, the top layer has been orange on King's Day or when the national football team plays in large international tournaments. The filling is invariably a sweet, yellow pastry cream. Lekker!

Utrecht is the third city of the Netherlands and is well-known as a vibrant but cozy student city! It looks a bit like Amsterdam, but smaller and less tourists. Perfect! ;) You should definitely go there for a day trip; a good thing it's only 30 minutes by train!

Verjaardag is the Dutch word for birthday, so Happy Birthday is Fijne verjaardag! On a typical Dutch birthday party you don't only congratulate the Birthday boy/girl but also their mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousins and friends.. So after Gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag! You'll congratulate all the others at the party:Gefeliciteerd met je broertje! (Congratulations with your brother) etc etc.  Foreigners find this a bit strange sometimes..

Water! Water has been the biggest enemy of the Dutch people since.. forever! Did you know that most part of the Netherlands are beneath sea level, the lowest point is even 7,75 meters below the sea level! 24/7 water has to been pumped around, otherwise two third of the country would disappear within 12 hours!

Meet the Student of the Week!

This time Shannon Mann is our Student of the Week, because of all her enthusiasm and help during our activities! During the SocialErasmus activity 'Games with the Eldery' in de Vreugdehof elderly centre she met Robbie, a woman that loved her enthusiasm so much that she even asked Shannon to move in with her! And in Prague she was also unstoppable. Thank you Shannon!
